In 2016 I went back to a local grocery distributor where I had worked as an HBC merchandiser. I came back as a Utility, someone more experienced who didnt work a set route. I was replacing a woman who was leaving and the supervisor had no one worth promoting. My wife was the other Utility and for years we held that dept together. We worked disasters, holidays, birthdays, whatever.
3 years ago I was offered a promotion to the Set Crew. Something I wanted a lot and was excited for. It involved a lot of out of town work which wasnt ideal as we were trying to get pregnant but I was offered a very nice raise. I was also told that my mileage, a decent amount of money, would not change. A good thing because I had a fairly new truck and note. I got rid of a decent paid off truck so I could be prepared with a newer more reliable one.
Well in Feb 2020 I start and the BS started. First they gave me a raise that was several thousand less than they initially offered (key word, they offered and I said yes). And they stuck me in a company vehicle costing me my mileage. End result most weeks I was taking home less than my previous position. And I was also salary now so no OT, no paid holidays, no paid birthday, etc.
I went along with it because COVID hit right after I started and my wife was pregnant. For a few months resets were cancelled so I helped out my old dept. When resets started again I did it for a couple months before the boss told me he wanted me to work my old job for the rest of the year, at my new pay and no mileage. Working my old job for less money while paying for a truck sitting in the driveway.
I stuck it out. Wife gave birth in Oct and went on maternity leave until Jan. In Jan I would go back to Set which held less appeal after actually having the baby. I sent an email to my boss explaining my issue with my pay. He replied he would work something out then ignored me for the rest of the year. So come end of Dec I quit.
Since then I have been a stay at home dad. Worked a couple of part time jobs and have a side business assembling furniture. But my wifes pay is enough to get by. My boss managed to hire someone to replace me in Set but then had his oldest and most experienced guy got injured and retired. The woman I replaced in HBC came back to replace me in Utility.
But now my wife is bored with a job that really has no opportunities for advancement. she has no interest in Set. Plus while we are fine she would like more money. So she is transferring to the Transportation dept to train as a truck driver. Plus the other Utility woman is leaving to take over a tortilla route. And supervisor still has no one to promote to Utility as well as a lot of new inexperienced people. Boss is still short a Set. They are offering my wife a huge raise to stay. More than they initially offered me for Set. An unprecedented amount for Utility. She still plans to turn it down and go to Trans.
So I cant wait until the transfer goes through. Then I can email former boss to remind him that if he had lived up to his word and paid me properly I would still be working Set. And my wife would be the primary caregiver since I would be out of town a lot. Meaning she would not be going anywhere. He screws one good worker and lost two.
