Case in point about YouTube's ridiculous algorithm. A video I just did on a missile system just got flagged, and the issue seems to be ... using the word missile.
It's honestly like they're doing their upmost to kill small channels. Because let's be honest, this doesn't effect the big channels. CNN, The Sun, Fox News---they can show what they like. Even raw combat footage without any context.
A small channel like mine says the word missile a few too many times---demonetised.
It's a f***ing joke.

Being under the thumb of algorithms and oversensitivity is one of my least favorite ways the internet has 'evolved' in recent years.

I assumed it was to avoid getting screwed by the algorithm somehow, but I'm probably the last person who should talk about that kind of stuff, as I have only the slightest clue about any of it. That's actually pretty much right, along with trying to avoid swearing right near the beginning of a video. There is a lot of automation handling monetization, your video getting recommended, etc, and they try to be careful about rocking the boat when the difference between making money on a video or not is in the balance.

It’s difficult when you watch a lot of true crime content on YouTube and words like kill, sexual assault, abuse, rape, murder all get censored out when they’re pretty important to the story

Between censorship, too many ads and constant pandering to big channels while making it hard for small ones, theres a clear opening. But the other choices are absolute shit--Daily Motion. Or have terrible monetisation so theyre not worth small youtubers going to.

Between censorship, too many ads and constant pandering to big channels while making it hard for small ones, theres a clear opening. But the other choices are absolute shit--Daily Motion. Or have terrible monetisation so theyre not worth small youtubers going to. Part of the problem is that, even now, as the largest and most well-known streaming site in the world, YouTube is still a money sink. Like, the bandwidth and server maintenance alone is probably billions of dollars a year. Throw in hiring people to review and moderate all the content that gets uploaded, and to handle appeals (and pretty much any YouTuber will tell you the review/appeal process is absolutely busted as f***), and no one except companies like Google and Amazon can even entertain the idea of starting up a streaming platform like YouTube, let alone make a profit off it. It's part of the reason so many big content creators blatantly get away with breaking the rules on sites like YouTube, Twitch or TikTok. They get views, views mean ad revenue, ad revenue means money. So they can't afford to ban someone like the Paul brothers or Amouranth for any extended period of time, because if they held those creators to the same standards they held everyone else on the platform to, they'd take a huge hit to their bottom line.

I have to admit I cringed a little, but not from the concept itself, since it's an eyerolling yet pragmatic workaround for stupid algorithms as has been established. I cringed because this is EXACTLY the sort of clickbait-y tabloid-y headline that either an actual tabloid paper or a "lol snowflake"-type content creator would take out of context to 'prove' how 'soft' the kids these days are. Or something stupid like that.
The worst part is, they'd almost certainly be able to make a video like that without it getting flagged itself.

LOL, that is lame as shit. If you're a content creator or any kind of media critic, and you can't say words like "kill", "die", or "death" without your videos being taken down by content hosting sites, you have little choice in what word you can use to show the same meaning. We live in a world where media is filtered through the almighty algorithm. There might be someone out there that makes great video essays about world history, but no one will ever see them because the algorithm blocked his video because he used word like "war", "gun", and "shoot". On the other side, there may be someone who gets lots of views for subpar videos. But he uses words like "disagreement", and "pew-pew". And any number of workarounds to get content seen in a world where everyone makes content. Considering this comes from a Spider-Man bit, takes me back to kids cartoons being unable to use the word, lots of "destroy you" etc. But now, it's being applied to everything because, well, money.

Sort of relevant, but with YouTube's new policy, shit like this is gonna get even worse. The new policy is no swearing in the first 30 seconds of a video.
Why?
What does it matter if someone says f*** within 5 seconds or 55 seconds?
And apaprently a lot of prominent youtubers have had videos demonetised because of it. So, I fully expect on their next policy update, we will see some new inane words added to the ban list to make things a bit more harder for small YouTubers.
