If he continued to stay in character we would've never got the hilarious Hogan "Ow, you got me brother" story. CALL MY FAMILY, BROTHER

I prefer the Undertaker to just not be on television anymore, ever. I didn't like him in his prime, and I certainly don't like him now that he's a bitter old vestige of professional wrestling's worst qualities screaming at clouds. I know they are hugely important characters in the history of the WWE, but I'd be perfectly fine never seeing he or Kane on-screen again. Finally! I thought I was the only one who hasn’t liked his character the last 30+ years!

It doesn’t bother me about him breaking character, that’s his choice. I would just rather not see him on tv anymore, either in or out of character.

I thought I was the only one who hasn’t liked his character the last 30+ years! Mick Foley said in his podcast that Undertaker was just the only one of the 1990s "profession" gimmicks that stuck. While Foley's point was that Mark Calloway was such an amazing performer that he made a gimmick that others may not have made work into a legend, I totally agree with that take except that he never really made the character work for me. The idea of a wrestling zombie mortician was always stupid and hokey for me, whether it was the early-to-mid 90s version that drew power from a magical urn, the late 90s cult leader, or the more modern emo grandpa who is really into MMA version. Biker Taker was a little better for me, I guess, but his matches tended to be awful in that era, and there were so many other people I liked better. Suffice to say I was never a Taker fan, and even moreso now that I know that he was a bully backstage and, shall we say, not someone I would much enjoy talking politics with.

I was scared of the character when I was younger & even as I got older the character never really clicked for me. The backstage stuff turned me off him as a person also.

Honestly, I'd have done some different stuff with him before that point. To do some weird fantasy booking for a second:
Remember when Vince made Shane fight Taker in Hell in a Cell at Wrestlemania and Taker just went along with it? Ok, first things first: that only should've happened because it should've become canon (at least implicitly) that whoever controlled the urn controlled the spirit that manifests itself as "The Undertaker", at least to some degree. You can summon him, send him at someone, he's a destructive force with these weird powers that allow him to not feel pain at a certain point, all the greatest hits. Doesn't mean he likes or is loyal to you, but the angle there could've been "Vince currently controls the urn, so he can have Taker do that."
But combine that with how they did his cinematic match with AJ: as Mark Calloway himself ages, the spirit of "The Undertaker" doesn't have the same possession over him and after awhile, let's say going back x-number of years to 2015 or something, he started to become more like an Old Man Logan kind of character - he lives in the middle of nowhere, he keeps himself away from society, with the added twist that he's simultaneously himself as a human being but also still has the residual effects of being "The Undertaker" ingrained in him, which is partly why he keeps himself isolated. His powers just aren't what they used to be, but could still be used when needed, and he slowly but surely shakes it all off to the point where the urn doesn't control him anymore, and by the end "The Undertaker" spirit leaves him for good.
All of this ignores the annoying stuff that's come out about Mark Calloway the person since that time, I'm purely focusing on in-universe stuff here.

I’m totally fine with Calaway making appearances out of character. He’d look even more stupid still acting like a magical zombie on talk shows and podcasts at damn near sixty.
