Charles Mason defeats Billie Starkz. Speechless. Legit took me right out of this show. I just can't get into Mason's work, not entirely sure why. Hopefully he'll click one day soon. Speedball put on another great match. Good to see them avoid the usual stand awkwardly and wait to get hit with a high-flying move thing towards the end. Only thing holding it back was the time in the ankle lock especially when he was in the ropes. In kayfabe if the rules allow that but force a break for the the figure four later then they need changing. The Lucha match was cool too, Komander's rope walking ability is amazing. Quite the first round but a few results I'd prefer to have gone the other way.

Speedball vs Kommander kicks off the quarterfinals. Interesting starting with the winners of the last 2 matches.

Mike Bailey defeats Kommander to move to the semi-finals. Definitely a must-watch match.
Up next is *ugh* Charles Mason vs. Jordan Oliver. Veda is aghast at Mason’s fashion choices.

Jordan Oliver defeats Charles Mason. And the crowd rejoiced.
Janela vs. Lio Rush. Winner faces Jordo

Really hoping this doesn’t come down to Janela and Blake.

Mostly good tournament. All Speedball and Komander matches plus Oliver Vs Shelly were the highlights. Mason the lowlight.
Janella Vs Jordan seemed to go in forever which screwed the pacing a bit but that's probably more on me watching way too much wrestling lately. I'd rather have squeezed in another 10 minute fast paced palette cleanser.

I know booking has never been a GCW strong point but having one woman booked against the resident psychopath and losing just made no sense whatsoever. I’m also a Billie fanboy so maybe I’m biased. After the Bussy feud I’m over Mason completely. A lot of the matches were too long for my liking, Janela and Jordo in particular. The second show having the tag between the semis and finals was a good break but yeah take 10 minutes off Janela and Oliver and put something there. The finals was fantastic. Then again anything Speedball is in seems to be that way.

Mason is not good.
GCW really wants him to take over Atticus Cogar's role, but he just isn't that guy.

Agreed on Mason. I know booking has never been a GCW strong point but having one woman booked against the resident psychopath and losing just made no sense whatsoever. I’m also a Billie fanboy so maybe I’m biased. After the Bussy feud I’m over Mason completely. Though I understand your basic dislike of Mason's work, and wanting to see Billie go far in the tournament because you are a fan of hers, from a booking standpoint, Mason going over is simply logical. As you pointed out, they're trying to establish a psychopath killer heel. The way you make a character like that a real threat in terms of story is for him to be dominant and plow through opponents. He was eliminated from this tournament by the eventual winner of it. A loss like that doesn't make him look weak. Billie losing to a psychopath character like that doesn't really hurt her. She's younger, smaller, etc. She will be just as over tomorrow in whatever match she's in, because she's a popular babyface. I'm a big fan of Billie too, but if she were to have eliminated Mason in the first round, it would have been detrimental to the booking goal for his character. I get it if you simply would have preferred to see Billie wrestle in more matches on this show than Mason did, as that's just your personal preference in terms of whose style you like more. But long term booking wise, her losing that match made the most sense.
On top of that, GCW (and the indies in general) is very babyface heavy, with Blake and Mason being the only two in the tournament the crowd was willing to boo right off the bat, with even Tony Deppen needing to grab the mic to ensure he got booed against Lio. Mason needed to advance to ensure Session 2 had heels on both sides of the bracket, and with hindsight, allowed Jordo to oust one of those heels instead of having him beat Billie and potentially compromise his crowd reactions with two more matches to go.

Blake Christian attacked the red-haired female ref after his loss in the semifinals.
The two argued over a call toward the end of the match, and Christian took a swat at her that could have been a disqualification. But she counted a pin for Oliver instead, which seemed to be revenge enough. He proceeded to give her a beatdown until other refs chased him off.

That was quite effective because he had issues with the refs in the matches before that causing him to explode when he lost. While not perfect it was an interestingly booked tournament with throughlines like that and some big names exiting early. Helped make the most of being a one day tournament and largely prevented the common problem of dead matches due to everyone being able to guess the finalists from the draw.

Just resurrecting this thread to say I was at the first of the j cup shows. Apparently I'm all over the live broadcast which is fun, but was a really good show. Was on holiday in New York and wanted to see some wrestling whilst I was there. Ticket off seeing Alex Shelley live which was great, Gresham Vs Bailey was fun (although Bailey hitting on the girls in the crowd next to me was cringe), Star Boy has a Mikey Whipwreck quality I really enjoy, Billie Starks has potential star written all over her, Blake Christian tries too hard to be a heel, same with Charles Mason, and god it was fun to see Grim Reefer!
