XM SATELLITE RADIO has suspended OPIE AND ANTHONY for 30 days, effective immediately. The suspension follows the airing of the "HOMELESS CHARLIE" rant about Secretary of State CONDOLEEZZA RICE last week for which XM and O&A apologized.
The company says in a press release that "Comments made by OPIE AND ANTHONY on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend OPIE AND ANTHONY to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them."
This sucks, censorship has gone too damn far.

NEW YORK (AFP) - The CBS network has fired two "shock jocks" over an on-air slur against Asians, US media reported Monday, weeks after another radio host was sacked for making a racist remark.
The hosts of "The Dog House with JV and Elvis," Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, had been suspended earlier as the broadcaster decided their fate.
The show was permanently canceled after the two placed an on-air order to a Chinese restaurant for "slimp flied lice" and compared food items to certain parts of the body on April 5.
"'The Dog House with JV and Elvis' will no longer be broadcast," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo told the New York Daily News.
After the prank call was broadcast, the Organization of Chinese Americans, an advocacy group, had blasted the network and demanded CBS fire the hosts.
The move came after Don Imus, who had enjoyed a large national audience for his radio and television program, was fired after he called the Rutgers university women's basketball team "nappy-headed ho's," nappy referring to the tight hair of many African-Americans and ho, as street talk for "whore."
"In the wake of the Imus case, it would have been maddening to the community if these idiots did not get fired," Queens City Councilman John Liu told the New York daily.

They should've been taken off the air. This article leaves out the fact that it was basically a skit about raping people. That's going too far.
Then again, I think the idea of 40 year old men acting like high school kids on the radio isn't entertainment but that's another story for another day.

I agree with you Ani, just thought I'd post the article, as it relates to radio hosts being fired. In the wake of Imus' firing, I think we'll see more restrictions of these "shock jocks."
Personally, they annoy and disgust me.

Good, I don't like the idea of outside censorship but, self censorship isn't a bad thing. People need to be smarter than this. If anyone else had said or done this, they would be locked away for mental evaluation if not in sharing a cell with guy name Betty in prison.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a fairy tale about basically raping a person... should that be gone too? I do not condone rape, but I do think that people should be allowed to say what they think. Unless, of course, you are endangering some one. Not that I'm going to listen or agree with their views, but if I have the freedom to give my opinion, others should as well.

I see this two ways
1. This is bullshit and against free speech. Its not free airway since people have to pay (well for most markets)so they should be able to say what they want. If they do not like it , change the channel, Not that hard.
2. HAHAHAHA thats what you get for kicking Dimond Dave off the air

XM is perfectly within their rights to censor their talent as they see fit.

yeah, the whole 'whistles blowing = entertainment' is really irritating. I know they blow the whistle down south when it's tequila shot time... I just don't need it on the radio.
I have nothing against people that make their living this way, especially if they are on a pay service. If it's over the air, then it's a lil more understandable where things have to be regulated... but something you're paying for? I mean, a lot of people went to satellite radio to listen to shock jocks, so i don't see why they would get banned, if they are bringing in a lot of revenue.
If anyone has any numbers to dispute my claims, then I'll eagerly listen.
