I don’t think it was until the 90’s that they started to realise “The Song of the South” was racially insensitive. In the 80s the movie had a cinematic re release and think might have got to home video and some TV broadcasts.. I remember seeing previews for it on Disney VHS tapes and on Disney TV programming They released it on VHS and Laserdisc in European and Asian markets, but it's never seen a home media release in North America. Eisner himself personally kept Uncle Remus from appearing on Splash Mountain (maybe they thought the cartoon portions of the film were not-racist enough to be okay for the late 80's/early 90's). Though Disney sure loved using "Zippa-Dee-Doo-Dah" in a lot of their media like the sing-along tapes and the like.
I do seem to recall it fit a limited re-release in the 80’s. Might have been when it started to truly set in tgst they wanted to officially bury it.

Ric flair almost had a heart attack, then realized we were talking about Splash Mountain, not Space Mountain.

Bootlegs were pretty easy to come by. Probably why a lot of people remember watching it even though it never got released on American home video. Either that or they remember the sing along videos and confuse that for the whole movie.
It could be a pretty interesting study on the Mandela Effect.

In the last 6 years of just VHS hunting locally I have found 4 copies. With the bootleg vhs I never saw them until that Japanese Laserdisc waas well known, about mid 90s IIRC. Went from no one having a copy to every SumGuy grey market tape dealing having a copy. All of them with the burnt in Japanese subtitles.

Somewhere's in the collection I got a Uncle Remus kids story book that Disney put out in 86. So yea wasn't until after the mid 80s that Disney really started pretending the full film didn't exist. When wass the UK VHS release and the Japanese Laserdisc release of the film? As for the ride I never rode it. Last time I went to WDW was June 92. My great grandmother gave my brother a "Disney classic story" book when he was born. He actually found it and started reading a few to my niece... one story in there that he doesn't even let her see the name of is the Song of the South one since it flat out includes a slur in the title. Yep that story is in the Disney released Uncle Remus storybook I have. Along with the others from the movie and IIRC one more story. I will dig it out and get pics one day.

I would still love to know how they pulled that off.

I would still love to know how they pulled that off. The GameCube is pretty easy. Just keep It in a backpack. Guessing the tv is a printed out copy on cardboard or something, tape the wires to it?

yeah, it's "faked" since you will notice the cube power light isn't on.

The story behind the ride goes that legendary Disney imagineer Tony Baxter (the mind behind the original Journey Into Imagination and Big Thunder Mountain) used the Song of the South theming for the ride since he was designing the ride in the 80s, the movie was having a theatrical re-release at the time, and he figured it'd make the idea more appealing to Eisney and Jeffery Katzenberg.
I hesitate to say the ride will be the same; same ride path, I'm sure, same big splash at the end, but the actual layout, storytelling, and ambiance of the entire ride experience will be radically altered, and given Disney's recent track record over the last decade or so I'm not very hopeful about how that's going to look.
I get the change, they did go out of their way to eliminate most of the problematic elements of the Brer Rabbit material but there's no getting around the troublesome aspects of its history, but the Disney theme parks, in Orlando in particular, just feel so flat and uninspired these days. Still waiting for a new attraction that's not based on a pre-existing property Disney owns; haven't had one of those since Expedition Everest over 15 years ago.

All I hope is it keeps the nice little mix of a creepy/upbeat tone. I haven’t seen The Princess and the Frog but from I *have* seen of it, it seems very do-able.

Get Keith David back to do some voice work as the Shadow Man and I'm sold on Splash Mountain 2.0.
I'm also hoping that Bob Chapek being gone from Disney means they start the process of turning around the parks. I don't think it's any coincidence that the decline of the parks' quality, especially in WDW, coincided with Chapek's tenure as head of that department and got even worse (along with everything else) when he became CEO. Not that Iger is entirely blameless since Chapek became Parks head under his watch to begin with. But they've got a lot of work to do and hopefully Chapek's departure means that's for the positive.

As a Disney enthusiast, I just hope they actually start building shit more quickly..5 years for an existing ride was ridiculous…
Universal will have Epic Universe done in a shorter timeframe than that…

From the pictures I’ve seen of Disneyland’s new ToonTown, it looks slick AF. A far cry from what it was, it was legit the ghetto of DL.

Man, look how long it took California Adventure to become respectable lol. The entire park felt like a giant "f*** you" from Michael Eisner to well, everyone when it first opened.

Yeah, a lot of people neglect that many of the things Chapek gets (rightly) blamed for is stuff that was initiated or planned or otherwise concocted during Iger's tenure. The Bobs are what they are, but Iger at least seems to have a better grasp on optics than Chappie ever did. Hang on, gonna go over and cry some more about them tearing down half of Communicore for no reason whatsoever.

The last 10 years they did a LOT to rehab it to where it’s comparable to DL side as opposed to a poor counterpart.
