I wonder why don't they make "very special episodes" anymore, you know episodes like Diff'rent Storkes "The Bicycle Man", Punky Brewster "Cherie Lifesaver", etc. I mean imagine if a show like Bunk'd did one of those special episodes.

Contemporary issues are more organically weaved into the natural storylines of dramas/comedies/dramadies, so the concept of have a very special episode to specifically address one is no longer necessary. Moreover, given the hit and miss success of such outings in actually educating the public about it, they're generally seen with more skepticism now anyway.

They don’t have a studio audience to go woOoOoOoOoh?

I feel like with how often even comedies tackle serious issues now, the AVSE concept is outdated.
Like what issue are they going to have to advertise as being outside of their wheelhouse now?

Were they really very useful anyway? They were always so behind the times of what kids were actually facing, it was usually laughable.

Brooklyn Nine Nine sort of did.
Like the episode when Terry was racially profiled by a white cop, and the episode when Rosa responded to an active shooting situation and the precinct could only stand by at the station and wait for news.

In 2023 we don't find AIDS as f***ing hysterical as the audiences in the 80's did.

I mean, we basically have whole very special shows now. There's nothing one episode of your resident Black character getting pulled over for Driving While Black can say about profiling or discrimination that When They See Us didn't already say better, louder, and more articulately.

I don't know, warning against the dangers of crypto and NFT scams doesn't hit quite as hard as Will's dad not wanting him or Jessie Spano getting hooked on meth caffeine pills.

I don't know, warning against the dangers of crypto and NFT scams doesn't hit quite as hard as Will's dad not wanting him or Jessie Spano getting hooked on meth caffeine pills. YCDTOTV had a drug episode where they substituted being addicted to getting hit in the face with a pie for actual drugs. It wound up feeling a lot less cheesy or just off than Jessie being hooked on pills. Maybe if Jessie had counseling sessions in later episodes or something to that effect the SbtB example might have been better.

There are very few family sitcoms out there (which is where most of the VSEs came from) anyway.

They were very hit or miss (mostly miss). I personally hated them because most of the time it disrupted the flow of episodes, and all of a sudden my favorite characters in a happy sitcom are being tortured by something horrible.
As others have said, this is better left to shows that specifically focus on serious subject matter. Sitcoms set up a world that is very light hearted where nothing too bad happens. So vse feel like wrenches thrown in for no reason.

Realizes that if they did AVSE's, certain people would be all "Get your politics out of my TV!"
I am now wondering if The Middle or Modern Family had anything close to a VSE. (off the top of my head, MAYBE the episode where Shelley Long's character dies...off-camera, mind you...)
