hate to give the bastard credit, but Benoit. HBK would have been if the rumble was longer. Mysterio in 2006 is tied too. My reason being was that in 04, the rumble was booked in such a great way that where different acts where the story kind of revolved around Benoit surviving and still being noticed. The way Edge, Rhea and even Gunther were booked, were as people who were in a straight linear act rumble who just happened to draw early numbers. Besides the end result, they were in the grand scheme of things just other entrants that really evoke much of a "survival or outlast" feel.
1) Benoit 2) Mysterio 3) Flair 4) Michaels 5) Ripley 6) Edge 7) Mcmahon

Rhea's as I felt she herself had the most memorable sequences (and, as far as I recall, no long segments of inactivity), it was the most enjoyable of the four Rumbles, and it was the shoot longest of all of them.

Rhea for two reasons 1. She dislocated her knee and popped it back in during the Rumble 2. She had to work with Nia

It was notable that during most of the 'new wrestler enters, lays out a few of the current entrants' sequences she was the one taking the biggest bumps, whether from Zelina or Raquel. There was also a good range in her eliminations--Chelsea was the comedy one, Michelle got muscled out, while with Raquel it more about using finesse. Of course, it's so recent that it's hard to judge, but that ending sequence with her slipping off the apron also looks like it'll be something they can replay a lot in years to come.

That's where I stand with this. I mean, I might be a little biased because Rhea is my current favorite wrestler. But throughout the match she was fighting, her nose got bloody at one point which made it look more intense, and the finish of her just yeeting Liv out with her legs while hanging from the rope looked crazy. Through the whole thing she was visible and mixing it up with all sorts of competitors.

She also did well keeping an eye on things, too:

Benoit's Rumble was the best for a number 1 winning it, as the entrants in the rumble were good. Not to mention it wasn't a guaranteed feeling he would win it. Unfortunately it is Benoit.
HBK's win was marred by it being a short rumble and there being no actual legitmate competition as it was mostly mid & low midcard guys.
Edge's rumble win was far too telegraphed and a coin flip on it being him or Orton.
Rhea's was good and easily 2nd best of the number 1 winners.#
---
Ric Flairs win at 3 is still the best.

I voted for Rhea. The HBK one was the first, but a very short and lackluster Rumble is the knock against that one. The Benoit one was definitely impressive, and somewhat unexpected, but the knock against it will always be that it was Benoit. As for Edge, I couldn't have told you who won the Rumble two years ago, let alone who number one was, so that was completely unmemorable. The reason I went with Rhea was that she had no prior history (or maybe opportunity) of long matches before this.

Agree with what you say, but the previous year's Rumble was a warm-up for this year as she was in that one over 30 minutes.

(Even the ad-free WWE version is nearly 29 minutes):

Went with HBK because he was the first even if the length of that rumble was very short and the talent isn’t great, and also the event took place on my tenth birthday so nostalgia is playing a part.
Benoit. No, just no.
Edge. I know he won the match because I watched it but for whatever reason him being no1 doesn’t register with me at all.
Rhea. Too soon after the event but it was a great showing by her, but given how much of a star she is, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s not her only rumble win.

Eh.... This all pales to Flair winning from #3. That is in large part because it was unprecedented at the time. Everyone else is just emulating him. Heenan's commentary makes it even more memorable. The way he was on edge the entirety of the match, and then when Flair wins, "I told you so!".

If we can take away the whole Chris Benoit aspect of it, it was Chris Benoit. The entire thing was built around him, he took out all the big guys leading to the biggest of them all. He smashes the Bob Backlund record, he's the dominate force in that Rumble.
Unfortunately, you know...
It's a shame as 2004 is one of the best booked Rumbles by far. But it's marred.
Shawn Michaels' 38 minutes was shorter than Hercules time in 1991. And I feel bad for Bulldog - he went the same length of time which is far more impressive in my book.
Edge and Rhea sort of lurked in the background of their matches.

Voted for Rhea because she had a great performance, was a bump/spot machine and pulled off a finish where it could have gone wrong so many ways to not only her but Liv/Asuka.
I do want to give shine to HBK's performance though. Just rewatched it and while the names in the rumble are not great, the short intervals gave him little time to rest. He was constantly involved and taking a pummeling. Coming close to being eliminated so many times to come back the way he did was a great match structure, and the crowd was hot once it came down to him and Bulldog. There's a great Dick Murdoch elimination that sets up the finish where a Godwin is almost out but his feet don't hit. Still a good watch IMO.
