The neo Geo always amazes me that there were people out there prepared to pay that amount per game. Yeah it was arcade perfect graphics, but u can't imagine they had anything as deep or enthralling as Super Mario World, Zelda or Metroid. It depends. The Metal Slug series was addicting and most of their fighting games were top notch. Personally, I hit the arcade machine on campus every day just to play Bust-A-Move, a.k.a. Puzzle Bobble. Sure, their games were the quarter-eating type as opposed to the long style games like Zelda, Metroid, or Phantasy Star, but I’d have bought one if I could afford it. Back around 2003 I learned that out where I lived someone was selling a NEO GEO MVS with Metal Slug 2 and Bust a move. Was on my way to go look at it,and this person wasn't charging a huge amount for what it was, when I got a call and learned the money I was about to drop on the machine would be better spent on something else. But the dude sold it to a local bowling alley. Every day for lunch i would walk over stand there playing both games and smoking at least 8 cigs. Same bowling alley had Funhouse,Adams Family and Terminator 2 pinball machines. I realized I do have a obscure 90s system still. back 12 or so years ago my aunt calls me "Hey already talked to your cousin, found his old gameboy with 2 games in the closet. He doesn't want it. Do you?" Told her sure. Week later package arrives I open it up. GAME DOT COM with some williams collection cart. Thing lookeed brand new. Was in the box. Called the cousin. Seems he saw the ads thought it looked amazing,he was like 6 back then. Asked for it for his birthday. Played it for 2 weeks then went back to his OG Gambeboy. So somewheres in a box I got a boxed Game . COm with the williams collection.

Interesting thing is that because of how long SNK stuck with the Neo-Geo arcade board, cartridges were still being made for the AES console until like 2004 with King of Fighters 2003 and Samurai Shodown V Special. After that KOF games finally started using more modern boards like Sammy's Atomiswave and Taito's Type X series.
But man, did SNK get a lot of life from the Neo-Geo. Garou: Mark of the Wolves had absolutely gorgeous animation, comparable to the Street Fighter III games on Capcom's new (at the time) CPS3 board IMO. Not bad for hardware that first came out in 1990.

Grandparents used to run a pawn store back in the day, they got a Sega Nomad that they would let me play to occupy my time when my dad would come visit them at the store. That thing would drain the hell outta batteries and they would get annoyed at how often I told them I needed new ones.

I had a friend who was quite spoiled by his grandmother, and had just about everything that a kid could want. I can't remember how he got it, but he had a CDI. We only played it once, and he really tried to sell me on how cool it was, and since he was a year ahead of me, I was impressionable. Thankfully, I was pretty poor...so that meant I had to stick to my ol' SNES.

It used 6 AA batteries and only gave you 3 hours of gameplay at the most.

Had a family friend when I was in high school who was going to college. His roommate had a 3DO and he got to borrow it and would bring it to our house on the weekends and my brothers and I would try out some games. It's how I discovered Night Trap and the original Alone In the Dark. Had fun watching my brothers play Night Trap just so I can reference the character Weird Eddy, and Alone In the Dark was a lot of fun to watch and became one of my favorite games ever. The sequels, not so much. But I'd stay up late on the weekends just to see my brother's progress in the first game.

Outside of the Game.com, Tiger handheld games barely count as video games, much less a game console.

I have a Jaguar and play it as much as my PS5.
Honestly the game library isn’t great but for whatever reason I really enjoy playing it.
My favorites are nBA Jam (best home port imho), Iron Soldier, Tempest 2000 and AVP

Much like the early 80s consoles (Intellivision, Colecovision), it depended on the game.

The neo geo aes was just a home version of the mvs so at the time it was probably the best alternative if you wanted an aracde machine. Think of it as the arcade 1up of the 90s.

The Jagpad was originally developed fro the Atari Falcon home computer where having buttons that could be set to replace keyboard keys made sense. It ended up with the Jaguar because Atari were pennypinching idiots and wanted to save money, plus they killed the home computing side of the company to put all their eggs into that Jagfurred basket. The Falcon could have found a niche and kept the lights on as an affordable music software machine like the ST, but nah, it made more sense to kill it and pour money into developing the Panther, Jaguar, Jaguar CD, Jaguar VR, Jaguar II and Jaguar based home computing tech, until it ran out.

As an example. With Doom there is an overlay and you switch weapons by pressing the button of the weapon you want. Quite handy.
