A lot of movies, shows, books, etc, end a character's arc by pairing them with a love interest. However, a lot of time skips or sequels will also reveal that the relationship never materialized, or it did, but did not last. A lot of times, people can find that a bummer or unsatisfying, even if realistically, it's bound to happen.
What are some examples of media where the built-to romance didn't stick, but you were alright with it?
One that comes to mind is Regular Show. Yes, Mordecai's love life came to be an increasingly important part of the show, but it felt like a particularly organic portrayal of a dude in his 20s having misadventures in romance, so I was fine with him not ending up with Margaret. However, if it had been Rigby and Eileen breaking up, that would have been an enormous bummer. It suits both of their personalities for one to have been through a few relationships, versus a guy who would be the type to settle down if he did find the one.

Same with Sam and Rebecca, really. Sam played well off of both characters, but I have a hard time picturing either of them being someone he'd ultimately settle down with.

Shinji ending up with neither Asuka or Rei
He ended up finally embracing his legacy and being comfortable with himself. The infamous scene with Asuka and obviously his interactions with Rei, he was seemingly looking like he was going to end up with one but based upon last ending with him at peace and him and Mari as adults ready to enter the real world

Raj on BBT, he’s just alone. Apparently forever. Everyone else paired off. Not him.

Nate and Lisa on Six Feet Under. The way it happens is really sad and dark, but they never should have gotten married in the first place.
I'm not okay with it by a long shot, but Veronica and Logan on Veronica Mars. What happens is downright cruel to everyone involved, including a large majority of the fans.
HIMYM is the definition of this, between Robin/Barney and Ted/Tracey, except for the liking it part because no one did.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service sees James Bond happily married, driving off to go on his honeymoon...and then Blofeld and his goons show up and shoot and kill Mrs. Bond. It's absolutely devastating, but I wouldn't change that ending for anything.

The infamous scene with Asuka and obviously his interactions with Rei, he was seemingly looking like he was going to end up with one but based upon last ending with him at peace and him and Mari as adults ready to enter the real world The very nature of Eva pretty much means this'll end up retconned down the line in another revival. All the fixfic mangas I've seen still pair him with Asuka. Spider-Man: TAS: Peter gets happily married, only he finds his wife is a clone and she dies in front of him. He goes on an adventure that saves the Spider-Verse, he meets Stan Lee and tells him all characters of fiction grow up and Stan accepts that he's gotten away from him. He doesn't find the real Mary Jane at the end but is now searching for her, and it's not known if he'll ever succeed. And of course, a few candidates in the DCAU: Bruce doesn't end up with anyone, but at least he has Terry, who actually hasn't screwed his life up John Stewart and Shayra are soul mates who love each other deeply, but John doesn't want to be destiny's puppet and refuses to reconcil with her, despite both knowing they need to in order for their son and Batman Beyond's future to exist. (JM DeMatties ended John's relationship with Vixen in the comics, but that's a medium that tends to get ignored when it comes to expanding TV canon)

Mordecai not ending up with Margaret just means that cartoon Banjo still might have a shot with her.

The anime Gatekeepers, as I recall. Main character ends up with the childhood friend in the last episode (or at least heavily hinted to be the case). Much later on a sequel is made, which has the daughter of the main character of the previous series, and it's later revelead that the mother isn't the childhood friend.

Definitely a top 5 Bond for me.

This may seem odd to some, but what sprang into my head upon seeing this thread is JD never getting his hug from Dr. Cox on Scrubs. To me that's how the show should have ended.

House- despite the two of them “riding off into the sunset,” Wilson is going to eventually soon die, and House is a fugitive who would never be allowed to practice medicine ever again.

The Office ends with Erin still dating the unlikable tool they brought in hoping the audience would cotton to him, and Andy supposed to be happy with being a part of the Cornell admissions office.
Still salty about it. The writers really, really did not want to give the audience any fan service in that area.
