Fans aren’t the only ones excited for this match.

I hate when I see a concert coming up for a band I love and I see bands that I'm unfamiliar with. Like, who are you?? Why aren't you a recognizable name TO ME?? WHY ISN'T THERE A VIDEO PACKAGE TO ACCOMMODATE ME? Wait... there was one? Nah not good enough. 😤😤😤 Real fitting example too because some of the best live acts I've seen have been absolute f***ing randos who were pulled from seemingly thin air to open this show in a cramped, shitty club. I'm talking bands who like barely have a label but then just killed it and vanished never to be seen again. Kind of like the euphoria of seeing a cool hyped wrestleguy you've never seen before who does cool stuff. AEW crowds have shown that reaction before for lots of guys, and I just can't imagine the joylessness it takes to be closed off to those possibilities.

I legit am baffled by the discourse online around the hyping of Kenny vs Vikingo. Shouldn't be but I am

It’s not really a huge time commitment to actually learn about a wrestler you’ve never heard of. People always say “I don’t have time to to google every single wrestler.” But to me, it strikes me as being intentionally ignorant or lazy to complain about a wrestler you’ve never heard of before being on tv. It takes just a few seconds to google the guys name and that’s all you have to do. No one is saying you have to watch hours of footage to “get it.” All you need to know is he’s a Mexican wrestling superstar, one of the best in the world. That’s it. That’s all you need.

I'm kind of of two minds on it, in that I agree that you don't need to do a comprehensive study of someone's back catalogue to understand why people are hyped for someone, but also just because other people are hyped for something or Google will tell you a broad idea of who they are doesn't mean you have any reason to actually yourself care or be excited for it, or really even particularly want to see it. I do think some of the reactions people are having are absolutely overblown and stupid, this hurts nothing, but someone not being sold on the match solely from, "It's going to be so good, guys!" I completely get. Personally, I have very little concept of who Vikingo is and I probably won't end up actually watching Dynamite anyway but hey, people are excited for it, great, hope it delivers.

But I do get irritated when fans will get pissy about a wrestler they have never heard of before and will dismiss it out right. Wrestling is a vast world outside of a lot of fans comfort zones and it’s okay to bring in someone they’ve never heard of. So yeah, I can totally understand some problem being confused on the hype and maybe not get it in that sense, but it does feel like some people are being willfully ignorant to dismiss a match like this, and to me at least, seems in bad faith.

The whole discussion of the match not appealing to the "casual fan" is so tiresome. It's 2023, the "casual fan" as that term gets thrown around by E-drones on Twitter doesn't exist. In this day and age of streaming and instantly available entertainment, no one without an interest in wrestling is going to watch wrestling. It isn't 1998. I don't disagree that AEW should try and cast as wide a net as possible to appeal to as large a segment of the wrestling watching audience as possible, but specifically making decisions to try and draw in nonexistent "casual fans" is the surest way to put the company under. That's what killed TNA in the 2010s.
This match something that is definitely going to be enjoyed by AEW's core fanbase. And, at the end of the day, the core fanbase is who AEW needs to keep happy. The 800k viewers who watch each week, no matter what. It's awesome when those 300-400k that only occasionally watch check in, and there's definitely the potential that even more current WWE-only viewers could ultimately check out the product, but I think that it's worse for AEW to drive away the current core fanbase than it is beneficial to attract the new fans, who will only watch occasionally.

All you need to know is he’s a Mexican wrestling superstar, one of the best in the world. That’s it. That’s all you need. Yeah there's been a few that have just shown up on Dynamite with zero explanation and it's framed like everyone should know who they are. If anyone doesn't know they have an understandable complaint, especially if there's an inbuilt backstory. But this I is pre-announced with all you need to know in that sentence and there was a videopackage on top.

Even if they have the inclination they don’t necessarily have the time.

I really, really hate it when a new character shows up in a TV drama. Where was the video package? Why should I care? Why should I be expected to watch the show and watch the character's story unfold? It should all be there before they appear on screen!!

I'm glad to see the Orange/Kip rivalry has been renewed
I'd love to see them have another match for the belt, last match was great storytelling where Orange kinda snapped for the first time
