Aerosmith had also just released Rock in a Hard Place, the cover? A picture of Stonehedge. Dee Snider has said they got mixed around in a venue once and burst out onstage screaming "Hello Cleveland!!!" to an audience that wasn't there. Almost every rock band has had the same reaction, "How did they find out about that[embarrassing thing]?" Yeah, like every musician that talks about it pretty much says... yeah this is basically what it's like... or oh yeah this absolutely happened to us. To this day I have no idea if my ex believes it was an actual documentary or not. Why Billy Crystal and Fran Drescher are there, I dunno, but she did say to me once "I know you have their CDs"...so I've always assumed she just thought they were like a heavy metal Weird Al. They were on the Simpsons, that's legit. She HATED Paul Schaffer on Letterman. Used to complain all the time. Thought Artie Fufkin was hilarious. I never told her. I mean, like 25 years had passed, she didn't recognize him. I imagine now, with the Internet being what it is, she maybe looked up that band I used to listen to or remembered the movie and pissed, but who knows? She wasn't dumb, she was actually very intelligent, which I liked, but Spinal Tap was just a dead space, I think.

Ironically, about a year after the movie came out, Black Sabbath (minus Ozzy) did a tour with a massive Stonehenge set. They claimed that the scene in the movie was based on them, but the timeline doesn't add up at all. That tour was for the Born Again album, with Ian Gillan singing, released in '83. That started in 18th of August 1983, so it's very possible the Tap crew saw it, and included the joke in the movie.

also shout out to them doing the DVD commentary entirely in character, effectively giving you two movies for the price of one.

For one of their UK gigs the ‘support’ was them in their ‘Mighty Wind’ folk band characters.
Legend has it that Liam Gallagher was so incensed that a folk band was opening for Spinal Tap that he left the gig after one song...

Well, you should have seen the cover they *wanted* to do! It wasn't a glove, believe me.
