Brock is a dead end who has lost to Roman around as often as Roman has lost to him as a face, so I really do not see the point in him as anything other than a filler title defense. It's been done, repeatedly, and it's narratively dry as a bone. Beating Brock would at least be a "sorry we f***ed you over for literally no gain, here's something". It's not like Brock didn't put over Seth and Drew, so it's not like Cody would somehow be beneath them when he's at least at their level when they beat Brock. Like, we have to remember, too, Seth and Drew have been two of the only people to beat Brock clean throughout this more recent period of time. Roman has never beaten Brock clean and he's faced the f***er at 4 major PPVs. The actual finishes of Summerslam 2018 and Wrestlemania 38 were pretty clean.

I mean, 38’s hard to count outside of kayfabe because injury halted it since it clearly was supposed to go longer but I’ll concede on 2018 because I have zero memory of that. EDIT: Actually wait, 2018 had Braun try to run in with the MITB but be tossed away like a goober and Brock was distracted. I absolutely don’t count that as clean.

Cody is finished as a serious competitor if he has to take a squashy loss to Lesnar. After being penciled in for WM, losing, then that ridiculous Raw after Mania, the one path to redeeming Cody as a main-eventer and a main driver for revenue is to have him beat Lesnar, then go after Roman and beat him. That's it. There's no other way. A lot of fans are frustrated beyond the point of rioting with WWE and the company needs to do _something_ to assuage it. Finished as a serious competitor in who's eyes?

Finished as a serious competitor in who's eyes? Well, for starters, mine - I did make the assertion, didn't I? I would dare say that I'm by no means alone in that sentiment, either - after all, he came in hot when he rejoined WWE last year, then returned very hot when he came back from injury to edge his way to the front of the line. I seem to recall there being a great deal of excitement at the prospect of Sami potentially beating Roman and tearing down the Bloodline not all that long ago. If you're going to bring someone in that fast and that hot, you'd better be prepared to send him to the moon quickly. What happened to Cody was the equivalent of the ropes breaking at Extreme Rules. It is misery booking that makes little sense and really diminishes his status with fans. He needs a way back to the main event, and Lesnar, as problematic as he is, is that way _if they allow it_. If they don't, he won't recover for possible years - certainly he's done as a serious main-eventer for the rest of the year.

He might lose but does who watched the dusty A&E doc hear Cody put over the “chase” that dusty went on to win the worlds title from flair ? After I saw him say that I wasn’t as surprised that he lost at mania as I wouldn’t be surprised if Cody thinks he can’t win the big one without a struggle. His dad did have more than one title match against billy graham. I know that both HHH and Cody will parrot the wwe line but they are guys who love history.

But the reality is Cody is a main-eventer for the considerable future, he's the face of Raw and if he loses to Brock at Backlash he will just... continue to be that. There is also a distinction between losing a match and losing a fued. Out of interest though, at what point do you think Cody will next be able to lose a match without it (to you) tanking his credibility?

No way Cody Brock is getting a clean finish on a B show like Backlash. I say Bad Bunny and Damien Priest close the show. Cody and Brock go on before with some kind of dq or count out ending, allowing them to stretch this out another show.

As far as "clean" Roman wins over Lesnar, I actually think the closest to clean is Last Man Standing at SummerSlam 2022. Plenty of Uso/Heyman interference, but I'd consider that smart heeling when it's not disqualifiable.

What an absolutely f***ing weird match. They booked it like Cody was weathering the storm and proving he had what it takes to not only hang with Brock but bring him down and make him hurt... but the whole thing had a shadow cast over it of Cody just beating the piss out of him before the match in a super cheap way so he looks less like a conquering hero and more like a lameass coward who barely squeaked by even after cheating his ass off.

Would you compare this to Diesel vs. Bret Survivor Series 1995? Bret outsmarts Diesel, but still looks like a loser after the match?

I was sure it was going to be a DQ or a ref stoppage to set up the rematch. I'd guess there will still be a final match at the next PPV. What an absolutely f***ing weird match. I thought that was playing off Brock sneak attacking Cody before the match the night after Wrestlemania. I don't find it heelish at all. Faces should dish it out like that more often (when the heel deserves it obviously, not for no reason).

Next PPV is the one in KSA. If they do Beastie Boy vs Cody again, then it probably means that Cody isn't going to be in the tourney for the Raw Consolation Prize championship.

Brock did it to him to start the feud. It was just chickens coming home to roost. Still, they probably did it and the finish because they want to run a rematch, anyway.

He loses the matches we expect him to win, he wins the matches we expect him to lose… I don’t know whether this Cody Rhodes bloke is coming or going.

Yeah it didn’t come off as Cody “needing” to beat the shit out of Brock with weapons to win. That came off as Brock getting what he deserved for f***ing with Cody that way. You reap what you sow.
