It’s all-but unprecedented for one of WWE’s own guys, let alone THE guy to get a contract where he only wrestles a handful of times a year.
I get how outside talent like Lesnar or legends like Goldberg get ‘em. But for one of their own guys to go from full-time to barely part time, I don’t get how he got it or why WWE agreed.
Don’t get me wrong. Good for him. But how? Was it to guarantee he didn’t go to AEW? It’s not like Hollywood or UFC or whoever was banging on his door.

A lot of it is good will since he's well-liked and has become a reliable performer as a heel in a way he wasn't necessarily as a face. The biggest thing, though, is that he's basically universally beloved in the locker room, where they're just glad he came back at all after the leukemia. They probably are trying to not overwork him to keep him from retiring yet.

I’d imagine his health had a lot to do with it after what he went through. I’m assuming he only agreed to come back during the pandemic if WWE turned him heel as well.

The power of Paul Heyman.
Heyman was able to get a similar deal for Brock when he was champion. A deal that still stands now. A deal that was able to make Brock a free agent.
You want less days and more money, have Heyman rework your contract.

Leverage is one, even if he’s not likely to make it big in Hollywood. I’m sure AEW would make him their highest paid talent if he ever became a free agent. He could also leverage the fact that he’d be content sitting at home and calling it a day if he’s saved and invested his money wisely (he’s been on the main roster for over a decade). He’s also probably very well-liked and respected, which goes a long way I’d guess. Also, the business is different than it was. The company has been doing great with attendance and ratings even when he’s not been featured prominently every single week. PPVs sell out even without him advertised or appearing. Heyman being his mouthpiece means they can further storylines that Reigns is in even when Reigns isn’t there physically.

Goodwill amongst the locker room but most importantly he's elevated business. The dude draws.

He's been pushed as THE GUY for years but in retrospect he reminds me a lot more of Undertaker than Hogan or Austin/Rock or Cena. Locker room leader whose been there for a very long time, company dude who can always be trusted. And now he's getting up there so he can work like 5 or 6 matches a year if he feels like it.

Health is something people overlook He said he has to do his cancer treatment for the rest of his life and it does have some ill side effects

Eh, I see it. He's a good soldier, from a family of good soldiers, a proven draw who can have a really good match, even if I'm not a fan personally. They're also probably at least a little nervous about him giving Hollywood a try, realizing it's better for his body and his overall schedule, and dropping wrestling like The Rock did.

It is mutually beneficial.
He knows he is all they have and so has power.
They know he has limited time, especially having had cancer twice.
Light schedule Roman is years more for them to make money together than they would get destroying him on house shows

It helps a lot that business is booming and he is a big part of it. If they were struggling maybe they'd hit the emergency Roman button more often, but the current deal seems to be working for everyone.
It helps that they also have Cody, Seth, KO, Sami and the Bloodline as super over headline acts.

I think it has more to do with his leukemia than anything. He's in remission so it can pop up at any time and with a reduced schedule he can keep up with treatments and not put his body through more hell.

Health has something to do with it sure. But I guarantee that they need him more than he needs them and they will give him whatever to keep him around. When you focus so much on one guy, this is the hole you have dug for yourself.

The deal makes sense and honestly, good on WWE for catering to people who give a lot to them, especially when it involves something like cancer.
Now why he had to be given both belts along with that is the big drawback of all that.

I'm currently trying to negotiate the same deal with FAN. They don't give such deals to D+ players like me.
