My almost 7 yo son wants to go see this but I think it'll be too intense for him in a theater. He's watched other Godzilla movies including the newer American ones without issue at home, but the theater is a lot different. Also, he's a good reader but I don't think he'll keep up with subtitles. My friend told me he wanted to take his 7 year old but decided against it for the same reason. He loves monster movies but there is no way he’s going to read the subtitles. I asked if it was because he didn’t think he could read them fast enough…and he said…more that he won’t bother trying at all lol. I feel that. That’s how I was as a kid too.

I say you two should have their kids wait until the dub comes out.

Saw it last night, it was really damn good. Between this and Shin Godzilla, the series is in a good place; individual movies that go back to basics of using monsters as metaphors for issues facing a given time/place/society/etc., that don't hold back on the danger of the destruction they cause, and that work to develop characters you want to actually follow and cheer for. Doesn't mean there isn't a place for a more "fun" Godzilla - I still loved the US-universe King of the Monsters flick from a few years ago, nothing wrong with a good monster mash, but Toho seems to have a vision in mind right now and they're 2 for 2 on that vision so far. On that ending character scene… {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} look…when I saw where it was going I was like everyone else. I thought it was cheesy. But when it happened…I can’t tell you I didn’t get a lump in my throat. It was earned and deserved and narratively I applaud the choice. I wanted the happy ending. He prayed for it. He was heroic. He chose to live. He deserved it.
And in a story about so much loss and a seemingly destroyed people banding together to take hope back…it was the right ending imo.
I was convinced she was dead when I was supposed to be. The movie got to use it and the payoff doesn’t get in its way at all. I agree with you, given that {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}it really did feel like a case of "Earn Your Happy Ending" - the pain of her potentially being dead felt real, the struggle and the emotions involved in the final battle felt heavy, and the story revolving around embracing a fight to live instead of dying to further a fight made it feel like a thematic fit, even if it might come off to some as too much of a happy end.

Though I might mute one bit just so I don't have to answer the question "Dad, what's a whore?"
