So I don't know who this guy is or what he's done or not done in or out of the ring, but on a more general level I have a question: how on earth do you get to be on one of the premier national and international television shows of the biggest pro-wrestling brand in the world if you're that crap?
Like, how do you not get filtered out at any point before that? Initial talent scouting contact? Feeder promotion (where relevant)? Tryouts? Training? NXT? How do you get through all that without somebody saying "well hang on a minute, I don't think you're ready, let's give you another 6 months and we'll re-evaluate where you're at"?
I get that a legit Olympic champion probably gets to jump the queue to some extent, he's already a seasoned athlete by that point, but between winning a medal outside of pro-wrestling and getting on TV there must be loads of people and training he'd have to go through before he's deemed worthy of being on RAW or Smackdown, or even NXT? Shouldn't somebody keep him back until he's properly ready? A trainer, or an agent, or HBK, or HHH, or anybody?

Why didn't they just give Chad Gable this push? Instead we got Mr Shush and Shorty G, despite him being the closest thing to Kurt Angle that we've ever had Chad Gable should have been Angle's last match. Imagine the great match that would've been. They actually did it on Raw during the build-up to the Corbin match.

People go on about how Angle was a one-off and he was in terms of character work and quickly getting the sports entertainment side of the business he was but really collegiate wrestling should be a smooth transition to the pro game based on the sheer numbers who've used it as a gateway: Lesnar, Steiner, Hennig, Shelton, Rude, Chad Gable, Otis, Swagger, Ziggler even Cody and Xavier Woods were good at HS (and wrestled each other pre-fame) so how did Stevenson who was great at amateur wrestling and had two years as a high priority task for the performance center coaches just fail so miserably? Being good at any contact sport should give you a leg up see football (Reigns, Rock, Simmons, Big E, Vader, Corbin etc) or even rugby (Holland, Cersaro) I'm sure the judo dojos are used as a feeder system into the Japanese promotions. In short, Stevenson might never have been able to live up to Angle's sky high standards but how did he get to the stage where he was unable to work a standard match without getting exposed? To a point, I think there's a little survivorship bias in those numbers, because for all the success stories who did great in college sports and especially in college/high school wrestling before making the transition, the past two decades of WWE's development failures are littered with a veritable graveyard of NCAA athletes who never amounted to anything in the company. It's a great initial setting for the talent set and natural athleticism helps a lot on that front. WWE's spent more years scouting colleges than they've spent scouting the indie scene, and lots of people never make that jump well. Either they end up with no personality, the psychology or performance aspects of it fail, they think it'll be easy because it's the 'fake version' of what they already know how to do so they fail to apply themselves and learn, or they just can't convincingly do the fake shit as well as they can the real shit. I'd endeavor a guess that there's been moer failures than successes out of collegiate wrestling, we just don't know most of the names of the guys WWE pulled in and tossed away.

If I have to guess he has a pretty big contract for a new guy and the SA stuff played a huge part of the fans not taking to him. If Brock was still around he’d probably have done something with him too. 🤷🏻♂️ If he had a clean slate he probably would have gotten an actual chance to develop. It didn’t help that he kept pivoting on what he wanted to do either, he was going to be WWE full time, but then he might come back for his 5th year of college, but then he might do the Olympics, etc. Even with dedicated training and a good work ethic doesn't always mean someone will be a good wrestler. Jade Cargill is still really green her 3rd year in, and that's with 2 seperate companies having their best trainers try to teach her,by all accounts she was a world class college athlete and is working her ass off trying to be a great wrestler but it doesn't gurantee anything. Same thing with Gronk,Tom Magee,Tino Sabatelli or any number of people who were great college athletes who just never full got it as wraslers. For every Baron and Bianca who smoothly transition dozens don't. I don’t disagree with that but for an elite level freestyle wrestler the in ring portion is the easiest because they already know how to break fall, tumble, lock up, suplex, and grapple on the ground. Which is precisely why most freestyle wrestlers that make the transition start with mainly suplexes and ground work. The challenge becomes the character/promo stuff. For every Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, or Iron Sheik there’s guys like Dan Severn and Dr. Death both very good in ring wrestlers with intensity but not with any other range. Disregarding the SA stuff I think that was Gable’s biggest problem, being Gold Medal Wrestleman only gets you so far. 🤷🏻♂️

And in typical Vince "I don't really understand what makes pro-wrestling work" fashion he failed to realize how special Kurt actually was. The closest we'd had at someone "getting it" at that level since Kurt was Ronda, and she just gave up because, well, it's Ronda. Others like Gable and Corbin etc. have excelled but they didn't have the name recognition of a Ronda Rousey or Gable Steveson.

Gable Steveson wasn't a bad wrestler in the ring from the one match we saw. Just...he has negative levels of charisma. And has all that baggage on top of it all. Combine that with seemingly a lack of drive to improve, and yeah.

It says something that even this dude's brother, who came in with no hype, and didn't even get to keep his last name (which considering the accusations against his brother, may be to his benefit), has the makings of being a better professional wrestler than he did.

Wasn’t he brought in because he had charisma from his freestyle days? This dude lacked any presence at all…plus, was a scumbag. Good riddance.
