By the end of his WWF stint, he was being held together by spirit gum and fifteen knee pads.

A bit of a proto Bill Goldberg, if you will. He had about 1/8th the charisma and while Goldberg was no ring wizard, Ahmed makes him look like Daniel Bryan by comparison Ahmed had charisma/intensity, but they had him out there doing stuff he probably shouldn't have. During Goldberg's streak he was mainly squashing dudes really quickly with a very limited move set that played to his strong points

He definitely got one of the silliest chants over.
"YOU.AREGOING.DOWN!"

Dude was over, had incredible natural charisma, but was dangerous in the ring and got injured too often.

In 95 and 96 he was pretty over but by the end of 97 he was just another wrestler on the roster.

I wonder if he stayed in WWF or never went to WCW, who takes up the Big T role, or it never happens and Stevie Ray goes solo?

It's pretty obvious that they had big plans for him.
My guess would be that his body breaking down and being very unsafe to work with, eventually put an end to those plans.

I feel the subsequent angle may have happened a touch different, but the basic idea, Stevie Ray having someone "replace" Booker, would have been the same. Stevie Ray never had solo chops and probably was aware Booker definitely had the higher ceiling.

He could've been good if he wasn't rubbish.
I'm half joking and half totally serious, because that pretty much sums up his career: his biggest shortcoming was that he just wasn't very good at anything.

Didn't he also lie about his age? He debuted in 1995 and I had read somewhere that he was supposedly born in 1970. I know aging was a tad different in the 1990s, but even I thought "no way was he 25 at that time."

Nobody could handle the big Johnson as is. Imagine a bigger Johnson... or don't. It's okay.

I DO have to say that 7 year old me thought that the Pearl River Plunge was second only to the Tombstone in terms of "That looks cool as f***"

I know aging was a tad different in the 1990s, but even I thought "no way was he 25 at that time." Yep, he was significantly older. He basically got into the WWF the last opportunity he could have had to, and WCW was where the clock caught up with him, with him putting on weight and being unable to cut it as easily anymore. It's also part of the reason for the injuries, along with just not being disciplined enough, so the wear on his body got real bad, real fast.

If you're wondering why Ahmed was never a bigger star. He explains it all clearly here.

Ahmed Johnson could have been a megastar if he wasn't absolutely shite at wrestling.
