They really didn't think this through.
Someone or some committee looked at a spreadsheet, and wanted to make number go up. That was the extent of it.
Everyone is jumping on their heads so hard, even if it was an attempt to hide a softer increase in fees, that's getting Everyone Disapproved Of That from all sides anyway.

Reminder: John Riccitiello, the CEO of Unity, was the guy who thought you should be charged for your bullets in a shooter, and described devs/publishers as "f***ing idiots" for not going all in on microtransactions.
And he was canned by EA for poor financial performance.

What if I told you they didn’t say that much in the links on this tweet? Especially the ones still implying market stores had to pay for Unity games.

So more stuff will come out. Whether it’ll actually be useful and helpful is anyone’s guess. Mine is that it’ll still be shit.

What the f*** did they think the reaction would be
Selfish, greedy morons, I hope they get abandoned en masse in favour of other engines and this destroys them

I mean, so what if a bunch of small, indie retailers go bust as long as the big company's bottom line creeps up a little.

Unity I really need you all to understand that there was no "confusion". Noone was "confused". We saw what you were doing and called you out on it.

Even if they completely walk it back they shot themselves in the head with this. Nobody's going to trust Unity ever again.

Instead of just walking it back completely.
Nope we are gonna look to just make changes to the policy aka just change the wording to attempt to sneak this past people

Sometimes companies get so focused on short term money flow that they either don't bother to look at the long term effects of their decisions or they actively decide not to factor it in. I can see it being possible that this was pitched and no one at a high enough level said 'hey, what if this costs us customers'. At the same time I could see them actually considering that and deciding that due to the length of production cycles, they were fine with the long term effect because of the short term effect on their bonuses.

Are there alternative gaming engines which studios could use? I expect switching over would be difficult, especially for game sunder production. But if studios have alternatives, then I hope this leads to Unity folding. Would be karma for what is basically pure greed.

The way the former does its pricing is much cheaper to get onboard with and the latter has gotten a major boost in attention from all this.

I wonder if Becket got it backwards and we weren't waiting for Godot, Godot was waiting for this.
