That IGN headline is so clickbaity lmao as if the entirety of SE's woes are FF16's fault and not the years and years of boneheaded business moves catching up to SE. You just know that gamers who are especially loud and stupid are gonna see this and be like “if FF16 had been turn-based, SE wouldn’t be in this mess.” That bullshit aside, yeah this is an entirely self-inflicted wound that’s been years in the making. I've already seen XBox/Nintendo fans saying "well, if it had been multi-platform, SE wouldn't be failing!" Y'know, despite the fact that FF16 sold 3 million units in its first week.

I mean, I will probably buy FF16 before too long. I definitely will buy the next stage of the FF7 Remake (I don't have the hate that others have, though I was irritated that Intergrade was as short as it was despite its cost). I'll even get excited when they make the next Dragon Quest game (seriously, 11 was fantastic).

Even exclusives are something best selectively done. Capcom clearly sees the value in stuff like Monster Hunter getting big spotlights on either PS5 or Switch (initially) while generally putting out AAA stuff on PC/Playstation/Xbox (and anything below that on Switch).
Square Enix is in a tricky spot in general because anything that's not cutting edge needs to be on Switch in Japan to make any gains, while the Western market has a lot potential via places like Steam which has to be balanced from the financial incentive of paid exclusivity from Sony. Multiplatform releases will not single handedly save Square Enix, but being smarter about it could do some good (KH still not on Steam, really?)

It really kind of shows how much stuff like the Octopath Traveler games and Triangle Strategy are pulling their weigh and then some, each of them selling more than a million units and the first Octopath selling at least three million.
Does make me wonder if they learned their lesson from Bravely Default, where they declined to publish it outside of Japan and Nintendo ended up making a ton of money doing it and the subsequent games, money Square would have got if they had been more bold. Of course, Nintendo was also in a better position to throw their might behind it in a way that helped it be as successful as it was.

It seems like, "Have Nintendo publish it then we'll publish it ourselves later," is just a thing Square sees as a business strategy now, given Octopath 1, Dragon Quest 11 S, Triangle Strategy, and Live A Live all also did it.

Less risk, but it also means reaping less benefit. I guess it does also probably help maintain a working relationship with Nintendo, though, so it's maybe worth it to them on that front.

Square's random wheel of platform choosing for their games has certainly not gained them any fans at this point I believe.

I hope Sony is paying them a shitload of money to keep FF7 Remakes console exclusive.
But yeah, they've made a lot of short-sighted greedy decisions that have cost them consumer trust in the long term.
