Between the narratives that Triple H is racist with the “lack of diversity on the recent PLE, his tone-deaf response at the Bad Blood presser and now this….let’s just say Triple H’s timing could not be any worse….

Meh, carlito’s stupid
Also… he’s Latino (Puerto Rico is part of us, but still their own culture and language). Many of them call every Asian Chinos for some reason. Probably legitimately thinks they’re Chinese.
I work at a Japanese business and all the Spanish speaking workers there call us chino despite the very very Japanese nature of the place

It's a shame that the only way to convey that someone is stupid is to have them make a racist joke

Someone needs to get fired for that. You can't be doing that, especially when people already think you're a bunch of racists for various things (including, but not limited to, how this specific group is booked).

I don’t think it was that big of a deal. It was a dumbass heel being a dumbass heel imo. You can showcase that in other ways, easily. Not feeding into racist as shit remarks that IYO has gotten before and gone on record as saying how much it bothers her. All it does is normalize racism, something WWE has done dozens of times before. So much so as to desensitize people to an extent where comments like this can be rationalized by people. Example: Carlito walks in after IYO and Kairi leave and remarks obliviously, “what’s their problem?” before the segment resumes as it did in real life.

Stupid, boneheaded remark. However, if it was an adlib by Carlito, should he not be held to the same standards as the writer? I see people calling for the writer's job (I'm guessing that it has to go through an approval process) but only wanting an apology from Carlito, which strikes me as wrong. I don't know how much leeway the talent has to adlib, but surely 'don't say something stupid and racist ' should be fairly high on things being taught? And equally, there must have been a meeting and it got approved by someone if it's not an adlib?

They clearly saw how immediate the backlash was that they scrubbed it from being posted on their socials.
Gotta wonder though with IYO's contract coming up and shit like this getting through to make air which is insane again unless Carlito adlibed it which is another can of worms when it comes to him if it wasn't HHH who immediately got on this because no way in hell if they are in negotiations with IYO on a new deal does he want any reason for her to up and leave the company when her current deal expires and if there is a situation that would cause her to even start lookin at the exit this would be an obvious one.

I can’t believe how many are like “what’s the big deal” about this.

I can’t believe how many are like “what’s the big deal” about this. It is disappointing that so many are being really dismissive of this. That being said, I wish there was room to have a deeper analysis of this. Like, how do they, whoever they are that OK’d this, end up thinking “The fans will accept this within the context of the televised narrative, ie Carlito’s an idiot” when they’ve gotten years of feedback saying no, that a lot of WWE fans still take WWE booking on board as a reflection of the worldview of the booker?

The whole thing is baffling to me.
Triple H has been involved in multiple, multiple, multiple race baiting angles, moments and scenes. He has also never, in real life or in-universe, been punished for it.
For a guy who's gone out of his way to prop himself up to his corporate overlords. The "Triple H" Era and Paul Levesque Era stuff and all that. This is a guy that is concerned about his employment and so he does unsubtle things like use commentary to talk about how none of this boom period stuff would happen without him.
So, with all that in mind, why would he even roll the dice on this stupid line? All it takes is one journalist to go, "Huh, that was weird. Let me just Google Triple H and see- and there's the blackface."
It costs you zero dollars to shut the f*** up with unfunny race jokes, Hunter. Try it.

Was just gonna say a lot of Asian Americans involved in wrestling are ripping the segment and saying if you think this isn't a big deal you're part of the problem.
I think it's becoming VERY clear people don't understand how offensive stuff like that is to different Asian cultures

Am I bummed out by it? Sure. It's not something that needs to be used as a storyline trope or a goofy laugh, especially by a company that just recently had racial issues be brought up and has had them since before most of us were even fans.
Am I surprised by it? Not in the least. People feel just fine being racist to Asian people and those who aren't racist, they make it their whole personality to fetishize the f*** out of us because they watched an episode of Fruits Basket 20 years ago.
There's absolutely no winning these days. It makes for a super uncomfortable environment. The group of people who appreciate Asian talent (especially female) for their talent and not the nationality or how docile/animeish they seem grows smaller and smaller with this hobby.

This is the problem with Triple H's whole "I don't see race" attitude and why it is its own form of racism. Being colorblind means stuff like this gets through a vetting process without anyone saying "hey, maybe this isn't a good idea!" Or if that is brought up, it's dismissed as "it's just a joke," "no big deal," "you're being a sensitive snowflake," etc.

I said it already but it could not have come at a worse moment for WWE considering IYO's current deal is coming to its end here in early 2025 and no doubt are probably trying now to get her on a new deal before it ends.
For something like that to not only make it past writers but HHH himself and make it to air has to absoloutley weigh immensely on her choice now.

HHH doesn't see race so he didn't realize Chinese and Japanese people weren't the same either

This is a really bad look for them. Even if they know nothing of the historical differences between Chinese and Japanese people, it's still a bad look, particularly in 2024. Shit, most Canadians would be annoyed or pissed if someone called them Americans and insisted there was no difference. This is a level well beyond that. It's not tough to figure out why it was a problematic moment.
Personally, I do hope Iyo and Kairi get an apology at the very least.
It was nice in their segment seeing the crowd cheering for them and they work hard and put on great matches.

I mean why not roll the dice when you've never gotten any tangible punishment for it? Dude's never really been punished for it, and it's not like bad taste segments were ever what took Vince down. I bring this up every time he says something stupid at a media event, but he's now working for the ownership that's been letting Dana White off his leash for an eternity. Unless he's secretly mega racist and gets Donald Sterling-ed, nothing is gonna come of this, so he can keep using commentary to puff up his worth and his ego, keep taking selfies with wrestlers, and it won't matter. The one-day anger of yet another awful bad taste comment will never reach a point where it'll matter, especially when enough people will consistently go "this doesn't matter" and drown that out.
