WWE could go the interim champion route. Say Roman is injured and unable to defend the title at Mania 40, so Heyman hand-picks CM Punk to defend it. Cody wins and “finishes the story” but Roman’s reign *technically* continues until he loses the unification match…which could be a long-ass time from now…

He should have lost it ages ago... so of course the answer is no.

Plus, Roman needs to put someone over at some point.

The creative outside of Roman and the title is so good — look at Survivor Series with no Bloodline and no title match as a clear enough case for that. So if he kept the belt longer, I guess the company would continue to thrive without him… but the creative is also so good that we’ve outgrown the need for Roman to carry the company as The Guy.
You could argue he’s not The Guy anymore and that Cody is already The Guy and he’s just waiting to knighted. So my money is on Mania 40 for sure.

It's this weird situation where you end up with both "What's the point of Reigns being champion if the product is still doing good without him there all the time?" and "The product is doing good, what does someone else being champion instead of Reigns really add?" as logical questions to ask. Based on my "path of least resistance" logic, though, Rhodes should have been champion already and should definitely win it at WM40, but I hate that I can't say that it's a 100% certainty.

I don't think they're going to be able to resist the urge to have him defend against Punk at SummerSlam and pass Hogan, and then from there it's going to be, "Well, he can't lose it at a PPV besides Mania," and then when they get to Mania 41 it'll be, "Well we're too close to five years now, might as well keep at it." Shit's ending when he retires.

he wont lose, him and the title belts have become symbiotic beings and cannot be separated for more than thirty minutes or the both start to wither away into nothing.

They'd be insane not to, but this run has bypassed more natural endings than Return of the King, so what do I even know anymore? You mean zero, because RotK is perfect?

It doesn't matter anymore. They've lost the all time pop/rub they could've gotten off this title reign. Might as well just let him hold it til he retires. And when he does lose it it's not going to be euphoric, its going to be just relief.

I feel pretty, pretty confident that this thing is over at Mania 40. They're at the point where if they jobbed out Cody again they'd be actively making their top babyface out to be a true loser (like, then the bitchalla stuff would be justified). Cody over Roman at Mania. Punk w/Heyman vs. a babyface Roman at SummerSlam.

Yes.
And mark this thread, I’m guaranteeing it. Roman will not be World Champion by the time Wrestlemania 40 goes off the air.
I’m winning this bet. Watch. Otherwise, I’ll put “Clash is a big stupid dum-dum” as my username for a whole day after the show.

Going to be positive and say yes. They can’t have Cody lose again. Him declaring for the Rumble this early does worry me though.

Roman is 100% losing the titles at Mania. It just won't be this one... or possibly the next one either. Nor the one after that.

The only thing hanging over their heads is breaking Hogan’s reign, but I think it’s a 90% chance Roman loses the title. It makes sense they pushed it to another year so their 40th wrestlemania has an epic ending like 30, 20, and 10 Was XX Benoit? I'm having a brain fart.

Shit's ending when he retires. Which was my point when people were talking about oh they just want to get to 1000 days. There is always another record or milestone they could almost hit. The bigger thing is... It doesn't matter everyone knows that wrestling is predetermined so it's all bullshit... Followed by this is doubley bullshit because Roman takes months off at a time to pad the hell out of the record.
