Wasn't Ric Flair going through his WCW issue with Bischoff? I know the dirt sheets were teasing in the fall-winter of 1998-99 that he was coming aboard and to feud with Steve Austin as the corporate champion. No, Flair was gone from WCW from April to September, so any chance of him going to the WWF was off the table before Survivor Series. It was the April INYH in Greenboro where they had Flair waiting on standby. The alleged plan was to congratulate Reid, who had recently won a wrestling tournament, and show him with his family. At the last moment legal decided it was too risky to show Ric when he still under contract with Turner and they scuttled the plan.

How did the HBK rumor get started? And why did people believe it? This was 1998 internet. People believed Goldust was going to be Vince's "corporate champ" and that the whole reason WWF purchased a casino was so that Steve Austin could looney tunes style blow it up with plunger detonator. Oh gosh!

Having Ric inn WWE during the Attitude Era would have been a huge mistake. They would be like hypocrites (yeah, I know that they did other hypocrital things) since they claimed that youth is better and being old isn’t (with some exceptions.) if you read Death of WCW, many wrestlers felt Ric was too old to headline against Steve and HHH said in a shoot interview that Ric should just retire.

Triple H said that in like 98, right? Or 25 years ago. Or 7 before the girls he's giving his hotel room key to were born.

And then 4 years Flair was back and over, as was Hogan for that matter. Vince would have taken either and promoted them in main event programs in 98/99 in a heartbeat.

I was sure it would be Owen as the Blue Blazer Owen actually worked as The Blazer on the Sunday Night Heat before the PPV and performed a similar lowered from the rafters comedy spot to the one that tragically claimed his life a few months later. (It was clear in this case they were working with a proper stunt harness instead of the jury rigged model with the faulty quick release mechanism.)

I recall that he "retired" after doing that piledriver on Dan Severn. In hindsight, I wonder if Owen's retirement plan after his contract was up was made into a storyline. Then again, this was when Vince Russo was doing the booking.

The Dan Severn angle would have been three or four months prior to Survivor Series. The Blazer lowering stunt on Heat was done to make Blazer/Owen into a joke because he got stuck. I think one of the commentators (JR or Cole) even said something like "the idiot got stuck."

Yeah he said that in 1998. And then 4 years Flair was back and over, as was Hogan for that matter. Vince would have taken either and promoted them in main event programs in 98/99 in a heartbeat. I still laugh at the fact during the New Generation and Attitude Era they promote youth. The May 2002 WWE Raw main event was Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan. It's like in one night they blew up everything they did and promoted in 6 years.

I find it funny that people want to hold on to a belief that the wrestling business isn't full of self serving carnys who would book or be booked by almost anyone if they could make money off of it.

Yet at that time, they still didn't forgive Warrior and Savage yet, so they were still thought of from WWE fans as old. They are all the same age.

Terry Funk was my guess for Mankind's opponent. Funk left in July this year, claiming he was taking a few months off. It would be believable he would return for one more match against Mick.
