Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
No one who saw these trailers failed to realize what franchise they were a part of, and adding the unnecessary information ruins perfectly good titles. In the case of Glass Onion it doesn't even make sense, why wouldn't it by a Benoit Blanc mystery?
Kenneth Branagh is not putting A Hercule Poirot Mystery in the title of his recent films, and they are doing fine.
Can studios please stop this?

Being fair at least personally I would have absolutely no idea that Furiosa and Glass Onion were related to the series they're in if not for the subtitles but that's mostly because I don't have any real exposure to the originals either.
I also kind of get the Rogue One one since that was supposed to be starting off a new subseries, it's just then Solo immediately killed that.

A few others:
• Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw
• The Divergent Series (the books the sequels were based on didn't carry the Divergent name)
• The Hunger Games sequels (ditto)
I dislike the practice too, but I understand it. Some people don't watch trailers, so cramming as much relevant information into a title in the hope that it'll entice those people into the theatres – especially during a period where people aren't going to theatres as much – is kind of a necessary evil.

A tagline that just confused everyone and made people skip the movie because they thought it was part of a franchise they never heard of.

The general public are idiots, the added taglines are absolutely necessary for marketing purposes If you don't know or care about the franchise, I'm not sure how including it in the name is going to make a difference to your viewing decision. If you ARE familiar, I don't understand how you could view the trailer for something like Furiosa and not realize "hey, it's another Mad Max movie!" This isn’t about you or me, or pretty much anyone on this board, this is for the people who don’t watch trailers announcing the release date of a trailer. People who don’t follow the industry. People who enjoy Star Wars movies but never think about Star Wars in between movies, who wouldn’t give “Rogue One” a second look but would be interested in “Rogue One A Star Wars Story” if they saw a poster or 10 second spot before a YouTube video. We are internet nerds, we live in this world. Lots of people don’t. Hell, I live in this world and I didn’t even realise Furiosa was ready to start production let alone ready for a trailer and release date. And marketing is more than trailers, it’s posters, it’s viral marketing, it’s a logo on a bag of chips or a McDonald’s cup. The marketing makes sense |

The "A Star Wars Story" tagline was meant to distinguish the side movies from the main Episodes. That's why "Solo" had it, too. And if they continue making movies without the Episode numbers, they'll probably have it, too.

The "A Star Wars Story" tagline was meant to distinguish the side movies from the main Episodes. That's why "Solo" had it, too. And if they continue making movies without the Episode numbers, they'll probably have it, too. I'm just struggling with someone seeing that trailer, and seeing the title Solo, and not making the connection. I could more easily picture it with Rogue One, but the trailer prominently featured footage of the final battle with the AT-AT's. To my mind, either you saw that and thought "that looks like a Star Wars film", or "that looks like a dope sci-fi film", or "that looks like it sucks". With or without the Star Wars in the title, I feel like the film still draws the same amount from the first two groups. |

Swear that Dune was advertised only as Dune until it actually debuted on HBOMax with the "part one" inter title. Especially in the case of the animated Miles Morales films, I don't know why you wouldn't title them separately. Linguistically and on a poster, it's just more appealing, and as an audience member it makes me feel like I've been on a better journey than paying twice to see two halves of the same story. |

I'm just struggling with someone seeing that trailer, and seeing the title Solo, and not making the connection. And again, it's not for the benefit of people who watch trailers or look at posters. Movie advertising is designed to reach everybody, right down to the lowest common denominator. That means people who just look up movie listings in the local newspapers, or see the marquee above the theatre entrance. |

I think even at the time they mentioned those were place holder names, designed so everyone knew that the first movie wasn't the full story. |
