Sure, but if he's been changed by the power of friendship, then having a succession of betrayals just undermines those changes and makes it seem like it was all for nothing. I think an MJF who's wholly alone and doesn't have someone who can go "Max do good things" and keep him on the line is just a way less interesting face.
