Can we go back and look at this Shane run? Even though it was ridiculous that Shane was given a push like that so late on I thought he absolutely killed it and was really entertaining. Probably the most I’ve ever enjoyed Shane to be honest.
What say you?

Everything about it was fine, until he made the Miz look like a f***ing doofus in back to back matches.

Shane was absolutely awful, dude turned crimson and drenched the entire ring in sweat the moment the bell rang.

I found his face run that preceded it to be even worse, to be frank. He was unironically presented as a credible threat to full-time guys, with the run reaching its nadir when he squared up to Brock post-Summerslam 2016. At the least the 'Best in the World' run, for its manifold and inexcusable faults, leaned into the fact the dude is a goofy cucumber.

I have hated few angles as much as I hated this one.
It wasn't a heel gimmick, but it was so obviously a heel gimmick. He won a goddamn tournament. Not by jumping off something high and getting smacked with chairs, just in regular wrestling matches, while sweating so much he made IRS look like a talcum powder commercial.
Absolutely infuriating angle
He eventually did turn heel, but Christ it was too late, and they booked Miz into the ground when FACE MIZ CAN WORK GODDAMMIT

He could've learned a thing or two from his father about how to perform in the ring.
Shane McMahon in his late-40s as a catch-as-catch-can wrestler having back-and-forth matches with the likes of AJ Styles and The Miz didn't work. Mr. McMahon never tried to grapple or go hold-for-hold in his matches, they were just crash-and-smash hardcore brawls. And for all his faults, Mr. McMahon was 10 times the in-ring performer that his son will ever be, because he never tried to be anything more in the ring than he was.

Vince knew that he was in the ring to put people over. While he was outrageously petty outside of the ring, as a booker and promoter, inside the ring, he knew that him getting blasted in the face with a chair was better for the business. Shane, lest we forget, previously left the company over him wanting to go toe-to-toe with Brock Lesnar in the Rumble match.

He was unironically presented as a credible threat to full-time guys, with the run reaching its nadir when he squared up to Brock post-Summerslam 2016. Or a few months earlier when he went 30 minutes inside hell in a cell with Undertaker and only lost because one of his insane dives going wrong...Or the Survivor Series match the following year when he was booked stronger than guys like Cena/Orton/Balor/Joe...or going back further when Kane's big unmasking and mega heel run in 2003 started off with months of having to sell for Shane in competitive matches...Or Survivor Series 2001 when he needed finishers from every babyface to get pinned and was supposed to sell the beating the next night and be fired in humiliating fashion but instead walked out completely fine and got the script changed so that he accepted the defeat like a man and walked out and didn't get the kicking and screaming dragged out by security deal like Stephanie and Heyman. I always hated him being presented as a legit threat. At least when Vince or Stephanie were in a match they'd usually run and hide, cheat, make it obvious that they were out of their depth against actual wrestlers. Maybe business wise Shane was a smart guy but on screen he always seemed like he wanted to be presented as this cool tough guy and actual real main event capable wrestler.

If Shane had formally trained as a wrestler in his younger days, I feel like he could have become a passable in ring performer

No matter how intolerable his character gets when he’s there all the time and presented as too big of a threat, I’ll still always pop for his music when he’s been gone for a while.
Kind of hoping he’s in the Rumble this year so that he can get a little redemption for that Mania debacle.

His Brother in law got a massive pop on his return after blowing out his quad over 20 years ago, no reason Shane O'Mac won't do the same next month.

Even Stephanie, for all her general faults, showed her ass (metaphorically speaking) when she stepped in the ring.

Never ever book him as some legit threat. He looks absolutely ridiculous trying to play “badass”.
