Like the Kiss greatest hits album named Double Platinum…that never went Double Platinum.
Although in Kiss’ case at least the album was still successful. Just not THAT successful.

I mean yes it's top 10 all time, but I wouldn't put it at #1.

#1 Record by Big Star, which famously sold fewer than 10,000 copies when it was released, and was soon to be deleted and found in cutout bins.

LT United’s “We Are The Winners”, boasting about them winning the Eurovision Song Contest.
They finished 6th.

Six Nine had a song where the lyrics were “police pulled up on me i don’t know what happened, police pulled up on you, you get to yappin”. Not too long later he gets a racketeering charge and snitches on others to get a lower sentence lol

I never listened to the album all the way through because I just wasn’t a fan but Sum 41 calling their album “All Killer No Filler” was a bold move.

Millionaires by James. It didn't make the band seven figures.

Album of the Year by Faith No More
It was OK, not the best album of 1997 though .

Same thing as the OP but Houston rapper Slim Thug released an album called Already Platinum in 2005 and to this day it still never hit platinum status.
It wasn't a hugely unrealistic goal. He had some buzz, the album had big name features/producers and in the mid 2000s Southern rap was starting to take over with Lil Wayne, T.I., Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, etc. For whatever reason though it didn't hit as big they thought. The funny thing is it sold 130k copies first week which was considered a disappointment at the time but with the way sales are now if he sold that amount today it would be a top 10 selling rap album of the year.

Liz Phair had a song about how the album that lost her her record deal would go on to win a Grammy and the label execs would be so embarrassed that they'd bring her back and try to take credit for the album themselves.
None of those things happened.

He WASN'T Puff Daddy forever, he actually changed names multiple times after this album came out. Unlike Wu-Tang who actually ARE Forever (and for the kids)

It did. They just got the year and gender wrong.
