Casual reminder that David Kapoor (known on-screen at former Great Khali manager Ranjin Singh) directed Raw and Smackdown in Kevin Dunn's place from the 2011 Power to the People Raw through the 2011 Hell in a Cell. It's never been made public why Dunn was gone those months if it was vacation or illness or other time-off related, and the common thought for Kapoor getting that spot was a thank you/make good for in 2008 when he blew out one of his knees in a needless falling off of a cage or chamber spot. Kapoor had, his entire WWE run, always said his end game was wanting to be a director.
In that time we got a dramatically different vision from Dunn's pretty quick, including:
- The R-Truth heel turn - CM Punk's Pipe Bomb - Mark Henry's Hall of Pain - Randy Orton's crazy face feud against Christian
Now, I know those great moments are largely on the talent of the performers/writers/bookers BUT - how much of these were presented in a far different presentation than we'd seen previously? Enough that, for that brief window of time, fans were calling it "the reality era." Think about the segment where the camera followed heel R-Truth around the arena, or how visceral the Pipe Bomb looked, or Henry's entrance from behind and just eclipsing the ring. A big reason these all looked and felt so different, so fresh, so exciting is because we had a different pair of eyes in the truck showing us something different.
Even familiar things were seen in a new way. Rey Mysterio was never more over than he was in the summer 2011 and I believe Kapoor's direction is a huge reason why. Mysterio ratings-wise was the single biggest draw in the company and that whole summer by far the biggest ratings moment was his tournament final against Miz for the WWE Championship. It's because Kapoor GOT how to show Rey Mysterio: you leave the camera stationary so the frame can capture how high he can jump, how far he can fly, and how quick he can be absolutely superhuman. Rewatch that Rey vs Miz match and you'll see a Rey that was far more impressive (even as he body was beginning to break down) than we ever saw under Kevin Dunn.
Anyway, I say all this to say a different person in that chair makes a big deal ("fairly quick" - a joke I have to make whenever we discuss early 2010s WWE otherwise I put us all at risk of ruining the Tensai gimmick) and if he still has any interest, I'd love at least a call being made to Kapoor to see if he wants that spot.

i remember the sh!t fit he had when i think it was either Court Bauer or Alex Greenfield went to Stephanie and suggested to change up Smackdown, different camera angles/production bits and Vince/Stephanie liked it and Dunn killed it

REALLY hoping whoever it taking over really takes from LU on this front in some apsects to not only give the show a fresh feel but just do new things. The big one I NEED MORE USE OF A CRANE CAMERA!

AEW does something similar to that. They use that little ringpost camera which I assume is what you are refering to. Never seen them utilize a crane cam in the way LU did.

And this: In the past, WWE has used that above-the-ring angle in replays during ladder matches to show just how far people fall to the mat. Makes the danger really shine through. That camera angle probably shouldn't be done in regular matches unless a crazy spot just happened or something.

I hope that whoever is put in that role now gives more free reign to experiment with different techniques. Even under Dunn they did that at points, like with the 4K cameras in early 2021, but they never seemed to last because he was so set in his ways.

And this: WWE used that angle quite a few times called it the coyote cam specifically during ladder matches and usually is pretty static just like said to show how far a fall the talent took. This is more what I want...with the camera constantly moving and following with the action and not just cutting back to the standard static hardcam all the time.

Lucky son of a...You know what? He's earned it since WWE is more fun under him at the moment than it was under Vince for the last...Since 2014 I'd say... 2014? There's been bright spots here and there, but Vince always manages to stomp them out. WWE sounds more fun than its been since the InVasion. Maybe it's rose-tinted spectacles syndrome but the last year I remember enjoying for most of the time was 2014. Either way it's more fun imo since Triple H took over creative than it has been for a long tim imo.

This sounds to me like they recently figured out whom Dunn will report to, and after a transition period, that person (who probably knows their stuff about TV production) has taken stock of Dunn's "fiefdom" and is now calling for changes that would force Dunn to try new things and ditch old habits. Would not surprise me to learn that he spent the last few months trying to ignore/resist what he was being instructed to do.
