His guest role on the Nanny was really good. Shame he was typecast so often. He was a classically trained actor. He just hit it big with Ernest. So he kept doing it, and stuff like Beverly Hillbillies to have the money to do the kind of acting he wanted in independent stuff. Look up some stuff on Youtube.

Does Jason Statham even play characters? Or is playing the same guy a character?

He also did some voice work, most notably Slinky Dog in the first two Toy Story movies.

Bit of a subversion, but a celebrity who couldn't go beyond themselves When he became the defacto showrunner of M.A.S.H, Hawkeye simply became Alan Alda in front of the camera, and everything he did after M.A.S.H was just Alan Alda in front of the camera. A guy at work was telling me about some movie, he said "The guy who played Hawkeye is in it" I said, "Alan Alda?" He said "Who?" I said, "Alan Alda is Hawkeye" then he mentioned some dumbass superhero and we left it not knowing what each other was talking about.

Add Don Knotts to the list of sitcommers who fully embraced their most famous characters. He became Barney Fife in 1960 and played some version of that character for the next 40 years. Don Knotts was playing versions of Barney Fife before the Andy Griffith Show like his role in No Time For Sergeants. The same with Jim Varney who played a version of Ernest on the show The Rousters.

Has Kevin James ever done a character that isn't fat and oafish? Which reminds me: Melissa McCarthy. I don't hate her. Heck I like her a teensy bit. But she can't get beyond the same Kevin James type tropes. I’d advise you to watch the outstanding “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”.

George Reeves. The 1950s Superman would show up in other stuff and people would be like “hey look it’s Superman!” Some say that was part of why he committed suicide.

It also probably doesn't help that his getting sick caused him to have to slow down even before it worsened.

By the way, has the guy that played Captain Harris did anything else? People barely mention him these days.

The funny thing about Robbie Rist is that all I can think of is his voice of Mikey in the live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" films. Hell, in an episode of the 1987 cartoon, during the "Red Sky" era, he used his Mikey voice for an antagonistic character in one episode. It was like hearing a mean version of Mikey.

Retro one, but I'm ALMOST sure she's OK with it:
Barbara Eden as Jeannie.

Alfonso Ribeiro said in interviews that when they were developing Fresh Prince, Will wanted his character to be named something other then his real name. Alfonso said, feeling this show was gonna take off, that "Your name needs to be Will Smith", so it remained
He said whenever he and Will go out or are out having dinner or something, it's never "Hey Will, Alfonso!", it's "Hey Will, Carlton!" lol
Granted Alfonso's gotten a lot of hosting work in the modern era, but I think most people will always see him as Carlton Banks first and foremost forever.

I'd say Just about every single member of Full House
Some of them did go on to do other things like obviously Bob Saget did a lot of comedy and America's Funniest but I think most people remember him and especially acting wise as Danny Tanner
John Stamos did stuff like General Hospital first but who is gonna consider him anyone else but Uncle Jessie?
Dave Coulier? Same thing, always Uncle Joey
I feel like the only ones who somewhat got out of it were The Olsen Twins themselves but even then they couldn't get out of their own acting hole which was "They're the Olsen Twins" until they got out of acting altogether for fashion. Boy did their youngest sister Ashley do really well for herself though lol
