While Shawn Spears is not the hottest signing, he really hit off with two gimmicks in AEW: The Tag Partner Search (which was ended by the pandemic, out of his control) And Chair Pervert(Which at this point AEW had alreasy ""given up"" on him). He is not the guy that is gonna do well in every role but he can strike some really good acts. It's a crime that we never got Chair Pervert vs Knife Pervert

I feel kinda bummed out about the symbolism of Spears being back in WWE. Reminds me of the hope AEW used to give me, which is now dead

Oh AEW are doing totally fine themselves, I'm talking about the idea of what they were going to be when they first started, which has substantially shifted since then. I'm not trying to start a whole debate about anything, just that Shawn got a pretty decent push in AEW originally, and then now he is back in NXT again. AEW aren't going to die, but they sure as shit ain't giving me hope any more

Spears came into AEW on the ground floor and remained a featured guy for three years, but in that time more and more talents came in, and a lot of them, if you asked an average knowledgeable wrestling fan, would be deemed all-around better than Spears in some or even all facets, and end up more over with little effort. Guys like Danielson, Joe, Swerve, Cole, Castagnoli and Kingston, to name a few. And it’s not like they don’t fit the same ethos that AEW was built upon. What have you actually lost hope in here?

I’ll say it till I’m blue in the face, he killed it. Regardless what or where he goes on here, I think and hope that’s where he ends up back doing. Some dudes henchmen with a comedic twist, cuz he’s really, really f***ing good at it. Also, I completely forgot about the tag partner search until I read your post.

Right? They have Will Ospreay, they have Sasha Banks. They's PROBABLY getting Okada. They have an embarrassment of riches in terms of talent they've managed to sign, and they've done a pretty decent job of building homegrown talent, as well (Orange Cassidy being the ultimate example, but also Eddie Kingston). Are there things they could improve? Yes. The creative's been in a bit of a slump and some talents need to take some time off from my TV screen (Jericho) while others could stand to be given more of a chance to shine (Ethan Page), but that's just... wrestling. There's only so many hours in a week. To put it bluntly, I think a lot of it comes down to "the new toy isn't new anymore so now I'm bored with it" kind of attitude.

And Shawn Spears is not a guy that's going to set the world on fire. He's not a main event guy, nor is he really someone that you can build a division around. He's a good hand which means his ceiling is pretty much midcarder. Which is fine, not everyone is cut out to be the megastar. Again even HE knows that as he said leaving WWE he didn't care that he was a jobber... he cared that he wasn't even a jobber... he was the catering security guard.

Chair Pervert is a perfect gimmick for NXT anyways. AEW is getting three people many consider the best on the planet at their crafts, Spears can be a chair weirdo and be loved for it in NXT.
A guy who is licking chairs or whatever is as NXT as it gets, it’s all good!

I mean I feel like this is just a massive thread derailment, especially when loads of this has been discussed at length in the AEW subsection anyway, and I was just trying to make a passing thought about what Spears coming back to NXT represented to me generally, but I lost hope in AEW being a mainstream, WCW/peak TNA-sized promotion with weekly television I could build into my routine that: - pushed more people of colour, women, queers and disabled people, including when Dynamite literally had a rainbow visual theme - would put PAC, Lucha Bros, or just the women's/tag divisions consistently in the main event if they had the hotter angle including for PPVs - would have joshi on basically every week - would be a promotion that wouldn't hire Ric f***ing Flair - would have more blood than WWE, mainly on PPVs only (so that I would be happy) but largely no blood on weekly television (so I could watch Dynamite with my partners each week, both of whom can't handle blood) Like I'm specifically talking about the promotion being a disappointment *to me*. Much of above ethos wasn't even stated, so much as implied, and I'm not saying they do *none* of the above, just less of it than I want them to, more or less since more ex-WWE stars became available over time. AEW is a phenomenally good, largely adult-oriented (mainly white) men's wrestling promotion, but that wasn't what I wanted, or what my partners wanted Oh AEW are doing totally fine themselves, I'm talking about the idea of what they were going to be when they first started, which has substantially shifted since then. I'm not even talking about whether Shawn Spears deserves better, if you find my posts from the time I think if anything I felt like he was worth *less* than his push, I was talking about him coming back to NXT being emblematic of how far away the early days of AEW feels now.

Time to put the "NXT is horny" people's claims to the test and see if Michaels has the balls to actually let Spears f*** a chair in the ring. I'm talking full frontal. Nasty shit. The whole ring is gonna air as one giant mosaic blur as if a giant penis monster rose out of the ring and NBC's only thought was "censor the giant penis monster" with no mind for how it was attacking people in the front rows.

Once she left, pretty much a lot of that dried up.

I'm not even talking about whether Shawn Spears deserves better, if you find my posts from the time I think if anything I felt like he was worth *less* than his push, I was talking about him coming back to NXT being emblematic of how far away the early days of AEW feels now. - This is happening right now in some respects, it did take a bit in those same respects, but a lot of different people with different upbringings are being pushed in AEW up and down the cards and Swerve is going for the belt, I think a lot of meddling in some things like LGBTQ might've been from upper management at Warner, which really sucks if it's the case, because Sonny Kiss did deserve better and I want her to become a breakout star. - The tag division has always been a consistently pushed feature, main eventing PPVs sure, but they've still been a major focus within the company giving us some of the best matches on the cards - PAC has been thwarted by the pandemic and injuries, so has Fenix more so injuries wise but it's really stopped both of those things from happening more than AEW simply not wanting it to happen - Pandemic also killed the Joshi dream and they cultivated a whole different ideal for the women's division. Thankfully we still do get Riho, Shida, and hopefully Yuka soon so it's not totally gone - I agree with you here but everyone has been saying yes to Flair, it sucks AEW is also saying yes to him, but mainstream media is too, it blows - The Blood in AEW has been kept mainly to the PPVs lately. Moxley has bled a lot less, I'd say a lot of bleeding done on AEW TV these days is in the appropriate match/segment or by sheer accident (That Mark Briscoe spike spot was insane though recently, Julia Hart is ruthless ) As for Spears idk what more you would have wanted from the guy, he got a decent run in the company and went out well on the Canadian Tour, but this is also just how the business is going to be Guys are eventually going to shift around company to company, girls too, and it's a completely normal and healthy thing for the wrestling business to do and I support it happening. It's nothing to be shameful about imo about AEW or emblematic of them getting away from their "original vision" so much so that the wrestling worlds talents are always going to fluctuate to AEW, WWE, and Beyond, and it will keep things fresh and even give these guys more motivation if they hit a ceiling or feel they've done all they can somewhere else. I think Spears being in NXT is beneficial for his time and value, and isn't some indictment on AEW that he went back there, but that's my personal stance on things, hope I didn't ramble too much lol

Spears seems like a good fit for NXT, and I’m glad he’s keeping the chair type gimmick and not going back to just chanting 10.

Yeah I think people's largely underwhelmed reaction to The Undisputed Kingdom in comparison shows it's an underappreciated role that isn't as easy as it seems, Spears was great at it. Hopefully he'll find a similar niche back in WWE.
