There was an attempt at a Fox show, Enemies….get it? ! It had its back door pilot on an episode of Married with Children. A subplot even has Al watching Friends…with the sound off and binoculars. Which is hilarious considering they tried launching another back door pilot a few years prior... starring Matt LeBlanc. Fox actually did turn that MWC episode into a series called Top of the Heap that was canceled after 7 episodes. A year later, for some bizarre reason, they gave LeBlanc's character Vinnie Verducci a spinoff series called Vinnie and Bobby. That one also ended after just 7 episodes.

I mean seemingly every sitcom there for a while was the same formula: Dipshit husband and his shenanigans, brilliant wife who always pulls husband out of the jam he gets himself (and usually best friend who lives next door) in, and cute kid(s) who are just...there. Has there ever been a reversal, where the wife was the idiot who fouled things up and the husband was the smart one who fixed things? I Love Lucy perhaps She wasn't actually the wife (at least not at first) but that's not an inaccurate description of The Nanny.

While there are differences, I always thought HIMYM was Friends where they didn’t hide the fact they were all a bunch of jerks.

Ozark was pretty clearly an attempt to ape Breaking Bad, complete with cartel involvement and a marital affair.
They even both star actors then-best known for playing the put-upon father in a family sitcom.

And at least Friends finale didn't make me want to burn down the studio I am fine with the finale as that is what they were building towards from the very beginning. They filmed all of the kids’ scenes roughly at the same time, including their enthusiastic endorsement of Robin as their dad’s new GF. I imagine that the show being so long-running is part of the problem. I’m guessing the showrunners were anticipating 4-5 seasons where the mom was introduced in the final season. That way it would have been only 3-4 seasons of building to the mother’s introduction, which is definitely better than the 8 seasons of buildup for a character that was always destined to die. Remember, the premise of the show was to ultimately dictate how important Robin was to Ted all along. It also explains why Ted was always portrayed as looking for the perfect one. He was both explaining his history with Robin while also putting their mother on an exalted pedestal. It was basically “I really, really loved your mom. Believe me on that. I also hope you can be okay with me dating not-your-mom, now that I have explained why she is so important to me”. That probably would have gone over better had the show not been so outrageously successful and ran so long.

A lot of shows are premised on "What if Sherlock Homes was ____", so there is going to be some overlap, though obviously, Monk and House MD are WILDLY different in actual execution. Monk and Psyche, on the other hand, were not all that different.

You could do an impulsive wife with a more straight-laced husband easily enough if you have the writing/performances to back it up.

Its final episode only aired in…… (Looks it up) 2002? Really? It was 22 years ago? Well, Jenna Elfman still looks good, all the same.

Supertrain was very similar to the Love Boat with having a different guest stars with individual stories except it took place on a train that traveled across the country and was run by nuclear power. The show only lasted nine episodes.

That probably would have gone over better had the show not been so outrageously successful and ran so long. The problem is in keeping with their endgame, they destroyed *seasons* worth of character growth as well as failing to consider that fans not only accepted Barney and Robin, but completely fell in love with the idea of them living happily ever after. And making matters worse is that they managed to do all that in the span of about 15 minutes.

King of Queens is just the Honeymooners. So are the Flintstones. So are about 500 other sitcoms. What do The King of Queens and The Flintstones have in common with The Honeymooners, besides having a fat husband and thin wife?
