He's had great matches but long title reigns suck shit.

It's the greatest IC run ever in my opinion, but it's only slightly marginalised by the fact that HHH has such a boner for long 80's NWA title reigns (including his own), that we've currently got Reigns, Ripley, Rollins and hell even Iyo Sky/Logan Paul doing the same f***ing thing as GUNTHER at the moment. It would feel more impactful if everyone else wasn't having the same sort of run. That aside, GUNTHER is the next must see special attraction now Brock is done. Whoever finally topples him will gather a lot of momentum themselves. Like all these runs were started when Vince was still in control I believe. But yeah, every title being on a historic length is ridiculous. There is nothing inherently wrong with having a few short or medium runs... not everything has to be epic and record breaking... though at least with Gunther's it actually broke a record. It would be kinda good to have a hard reset after WM40 as a way of breaking free from the booking of old and have every champion drop the titles, even if the new reigns last weeks or a few months. I think Rhea and Iyo are awesome and have no issue with them being champions for example, but it would be a statement on things if everything started again given the stench of the past year.

Probably top 15...maybe top 10
When I look at a guy, I look at if they're elevated by the belt, if the belt elevates them, or both. Longevity goes a long ways as well. But in no particular order;
Gunther Honky Tonk Man Mr. Perfect Randy Orton Randy Savage Razor Ramon The Rock Santino Marella Shawn Michaels Tito Santana Ultimate Warrior

My problem isn't with Gunther but the IC Title, it's going to take more than one run like this to convince me they want to make being the champ means something. Like someone beating him clean in a 1-on-1 match in the ring will be huge because I don't think that had happened in ages, not because he's the longest reigning IC Champion. Even right now to me the whole deal with him is people wanting that moment at WM against him, not necessarily the IC Title.

top ten but I wouldn’t be surprised if the next one to hold the belt has a more defining reign. gunther is the best but it doesn’t really feel like the IC title has been the point of the whole thing

Outside of Miz, I feel like the bar is pretty low from the past 20 years. Felt the Rock's 98 run was the last good run before Gunther's.....lot of Talents holding that belt who shouldnt have e.g Godfather, Chyna, Ezekiel etc I would say that Orton's 2003-04 run as IC champ was very memorable as well while Shelton Benjamin was an excellent IC champ from 2004-06. Along with Orton and Benjamin, The Miz's reigns as IC champ from 2016-18 was one of the best IC title runs of all-time.

The best I've seen before and it's not close. Based on the stuff I've seen, here's where it ranks in my mind:
1.) Gunther 2.) The Miz 3.) Rob Van Dam 4.) Kofi Kingston 5.) Edge / Jeff Hardy / Chris Jericho (dead heat)
It just seemed like every time one of those guys had the belt, the IC title felt like it had actual stakes and the champion was a workhorse. I know that Honkey Tonk Man and Razor Ramon had great reigns, but I wasn't there to see it so I would just be passing along what I've been told versus what I've experienced.

He's definitely top 5-10 for sure. Gunther had so many bangers during this IC title that truly made him a main event level star in WWE.
These are my top 10 IC champs of all-time
1. Chris Jericho 2. The Miz 3. Honky Tonk Man 4. Gunther 5. Razor Savage 6. Razor Roman 7. Randy Orton 8. Shawn Michaels 9. Ultimate Warrior 10. The Rock
Honorable mentions: AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Christian, Edge, Bret Hart, Triple H, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler, Rick Rude
