“Above average” has to be the worst adjective you could use to describe how good you are. Sanders was basically saying, “I’m a C+, B- at best.” And, it didn’t help that he was in a stable with a bunch of guys who looked like they chiseled out of marble while he looked like their sculptor’s accountant brother.

Like Justin Credible, he was highly pushed because they knew nobody else would want him.

I thought that was the point, he was, well, average looking, already clearly balding so he was a cocky little shit for no good reason other than he was slightly better than you and had backup.

To be fair, if he was "Totally Awesome" Mike Sanders, I would completely forget he even existed. That nickname has stuck in my mind for like 20 years

I read that as "Above Average" Mike Santana at first and I was really confused.

It's in a tie with "Mr. No Days Off" Darren Young for the worst wrestling nickname I've ever heard. And at least Darren Young barely ever used his.
Edit: sorry, just remembered "One True Destroyer" was worse than either of them.

I remember his catchphrase: “You are SOL and you know what THAT means!” So edgy!

Like Justin Credible, he was highly pushed because they knew nobody else would want him. So funny because despite him being featured heavily on WCW television for like a year, he wasn't even one of the guys featured during the Invasion and never made it past developmental

Mike Sanders' gimmick could have been amazing had they really leaned into its comedy potential.

If that’s the case, it kind of worked. But, knowing WCW, they probably thought “Above Average” was on par with “Mr. Wonderful” or “Mr. Perfect.”

I read that as "Above Average" Mike Santana at first and I was really confused. I really want this to be how he labels himself in his first Indie Appearance post-AEW.

Yeah, I’ll just echo some posts here and say I’m pretty sure it was a bad nickname on purpose to make this heel character look like an idiot.

He was a good talker and I liked the idea of the gimmick. He's someone who could have stuck around if a more financially viable alternative existed outside WWF after 2001 (TNA and ROH did come around but they just didn't have the money to pay a ton of guys for a long time).

Like Justin Credible, he was highly pushed because they knew nobody else would want him. At least Sanders name made sense. Ain't nothin' incredible about Aldo Montoya in jeans.

This thread is Sanders Slander and I won't hear of it.
Honestly, Mike Sanders would have been a good mid-card agent-type manager, like Mark Sterling. Having him as the voice of the Natural Born Thrillers was a good call, he should have continued to manage Mark Jindrak or something.

He was an ok talker but only in a very really 00s way. All cheap tricks, no substance. LA Knight is like the evolutionary perfected version of Sanders. Fine overall, but does a good job of easy mic things to get over.
And that's not a criticism against the type, just what they are.
