I have a friend that actually works at Walmart. I asked him a couple years ago if self check-outs took away job positions. His response? "Nope, because nobody wants to work that position anymore." My brother works in the local supermarket. They recently removed six of the ten checkout lanes and replaced them with ten self-checkouts. Our mom hates the self-checkouts and asked him why they removed so many lanes and he pointed out that they haven't had the staffing to open those lanes in years, and haven't had an "all hands on deck" situation that required all lanes open for longer than that. Hell, when I worked on the lanes in college – almost 25 years ago – there was 15 of them and zero self-checkouts, and there was only ever more than seven or eight in use at the same time for a couple of hours a day on Saturdays and Sundays. Yeah before we had self check to complain about, we complained about having to wait in long lines to check out while most of the checkout lanes were closed.

How many employees actually lose their jobs due to self checkouts? At grocery stores I've seen those employees be transitioned to the online ordering side of things. I have a friend that actually works at Walmart. I asked him a couple years ago if self check-outs took away job positions. His response? "Nope, because nobody wants to work that position anymore." Me, personally? I prefer the self checkout. To me, it's very simple, I don't have to deal with anyone (unless I'm buying alcohol, and then it's just a short wait usually), and sometimes, the fruit scale malfunctions, giving me a hell of a deal (Got 7 bananas one time for a nickel). I wish the Targets around here had more self checkouts. That's usually the longest line, because have only like 2 people running the regular checkouts. Just speaking personally but other than the awkward social interaction I would just prefer to work around the store doing other jobs and being on my feet. I always found time on checkouts would go so slowly especially if you’re not busy or you have a clock next to you telling you the time. But that’s a personal thing I’m sure some people enjoy working on checkouts.

A bunch of the stores up here have seen a dramatic increase in shoplifting since they introduced it and now they're setting up these exits where you have to scan a receipt to leave (which as it turns out is illegal).

This thread has taught me that the FAN community hates humanity. don't think it's hate as such but mostly socially anxious, I know I am horribly shy and timid so I avoid people a lot of time in my life so self check outs are very handy for us awkward sorts!

When they're an option, I will only use self-checkouts.
The biggest factor in this is that I can't seem to get cashiers who don't lick their thumbs with every bag you get. I am undeniably a germophobe, and I don't need your drool all over my purchases.
The secondary reasons are 1) I don't have anyone tossing my action figures around and messing up the packaging, and 2) I don't have to talk to anyone.

I like it if I have a few items but think they're still figuring it out. One of our supermarket chains just introduced carts that allow you to scan items as you shop and check out right from the cart. If that pilot program works, it seems like that will be the real gamechanger. Some Amazon grocery stores in my area have that. Used it a few times and pretty simple to use

Ok keep seeing people mention the self checkouts acting up or yelling at them.
Now my local store has to be the worst one in that chain. Shelves are usually half empty. The aisles blocked by pallets of stock,ETC.
But the self checkouts work great. Only issue I have had was if I was buying say a R rated DVD it might take the person working that are a minute or so to walk over and confirm Yes I am over 17.
So either there is some embellishing going on in some posts or the self checkouts are the only thing at the local store that isnt sub par.
