Hellraiser 2022, not a reboot of the 1987 Hellraiser but a new adaptation of the original Hellbound Heart novella, received backlash for, of all things, casting a trans woman as the Lead Cenobite popularly known as Pinhead. Setting aside the fact that the Lead Cenobite was female in the original novella, the book and the movie are about heavily mutilated sadomasochists from a hell dimension, and it's inspired by Clive Barker's experiences with addiction and going to gay BDSM clubs. Of all the "culture war" BS, anything Hellraiser is just the weirdest hill to die on. As for my personal opinion, try as you might, no matter how loud you say "this is a NEW adaptation of the ORIGINAL source material", you're always gonna be judged by the adaptations that came before. This is why Warner Bros has had so much trouble adapting Superman; you're not just adapting events from a comic book. Your Clark is gonna be judged against Reeves and Routh (and now Cavill), your Lois is gonna be judged against Kidder and Bosworth (and now Adams), your score is gonna be judged against Williams, and your action scenes have to be more exciting than the Donner films, while also showing more care for civilians than the Snyder films, and that's just the surface stuff.I just remembered something. In the past, I watched the 2006 "Casino Royale" and my dad asked if there was another film called that. I am aware of the 1967 spy spoof with that title, as well as the 1954 TV episode of some series. My dad quickly dismissed the 2006 film as a remake, but in reality, not a lot of people know about the 1954 film/TV show episode's existence. Plus, the 2006 film was the true film adaptation of Ian Flemming's book of the same name. I had to correct my dad regarding that. I also recall some people calling "The Dark Knight" a remake of the 1989 Batman film. Some people also said that "Batman Begins" was a prequel to 1989's "Batman." Of course, in the 2000s, I think if people had to whine about remakes and stuff, they had to go to other forums or IMDB forums to do that, not all over social media when the most common one at that time was MySpace.

Such an interesting post. With many Disney property's becoming public domains in the next 20 years, this is going to become somewhat commonplace In movie terms, I think when a studio uses the same logo, music score, it's a remake (2016 Ghostbusters). If they took the concept of ghost hunting and did not use any of the Ghostbusters tropes, I would consider it an adaptation. To be my own devil's advocate, the Into the Spiderverse uses all the Spider-Man tropes and is completely different than any other of the Spider-Man movies. Being a cartoon helps. Honestly, most of Disney’s early movies were always up for grabs as they simply were adaptations of long existing materials. Sure, they occasionally added a Disney twist and those aspects were out of bounds for everyone else, but you could always put out your version of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc. Speaking of adaptations, it wasn’t until I was about 1/3-1/2 the way through “O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?” until I realized it was an adaptation of Homer’s “Odyssey”. I started rewatching and then noticed they literally tell you it is in the opening credits.

From what I remember the "Lead" Cenobite (which is a misnomer as they are not the LEADER of the cenobites just the one that talked first) was fully androgynous.

I recall when the 2018 "Tomb Raider" film was coming out, a woman on Facebook quickly dismissed the film as a remake and said something to the effect of "Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft, not this woman!" I had to tell her that the 2018 film is a newer adaptation that was based on the 2010s games and that the Angelina Jolie films were more based on the games from the 1990s to early-2000s. The woman told me she didn't know that "Tomb Raider" was a video game and that she doesn't play video games. So at least the gamers understood that the 2018 film had more in common with the Survivor trilogy while the early-2000s films had more in common with the old series from Core Design.
Speaking of which, I recall the Survivor trilogy wasn't the first reboot of "Tomb Raider" as we had the games from the late-2000s, the Legend trilogy. While "Tomb Raider: Anniversary" was a remake of the original game, there were some elements that were changed up to fit with the storyline of "Tomb Raider: Legend" and "Tomb Raider: Underworld."
