As in ONE huge song then virtually nothing else successful.
I’ve been revisiting some South Park episodes and “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” by Silento briefly played in one episode and made me think of this.
If you look Silento up on eBay, a good chunk of the results actually related to the artist aren’t even audio related (more just pics and memorabilia). If you look him up on Wikipedia his albums are non-linkers (they don’t even have their own pages). Yet, if you go on YouTube and sort his videos by most popular, “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” has 1.9 BILLON views.
Silento’s top 4 videos are all related to that song and the fifth most popular video has a mere 2.8 million views. 2.8 million views is great for a developing influencer or something, but for someone with 1.9 BILLION views on one video, 2.8 million is just about statistically insignificant. Heck, it could mostly be comprised of the, “Wait this guy actually has other songs?” demographic who made it part way through the video once and never came back.
On top of all that his current legal predicament (he stands accused of killing his cousin) makes it very unlikely he’ll have a follow up hit.

"Bad Day" by Daniel Powter was the no. 1 song in America for five weeks back in 2005, it went 3x platinum, and it has 252 million views on YouTube.
None of his other singles even charted in the U.S.
And since we're going back to 2000, then we can also count the Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out." It was arguably the biggest cultural sensation since the Macarena, being played EVERYWHERE - sporting events, weddings, proms, birthday parties, the works. It was ubiquitous in the summer and fall of 2000. Oddly enough, it only peaked at no. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, but that's still 54 spots higher than any other Baha Men song ever charted in the States.

Afro Man “Because I Got High” has it all catchy, silly, and everywhere for a minute.
Side note: apparently AfroMan may be running for US President. f*** it he’s got my vote. lol

Technically, wasn’t that a hit in 1999?

Technically, wasn’t that a hit in 1999? Wikipedia says it charted #1 in 2001.

Gotye had a total of two songs chart on the US Hot 100. “Eyes Wide Open” peaked at #96. Its follow-up, “Somebody I Used to Know” peaked at #1. He hasn’t charted here since.
I thought for sure Psy would qualify but he followed up “Gangnam Style” with another Top 5 song, “Gentleman”. I was aware of the song because of the video, but I assumed it went nowhere (I generally don’t listen to Top 40 stations).

I live under a modern music rock so this may be totally ignorant but... Has Walk The Earth released a hit besides "Shut Up and Dance"? What about Carly Rae Jepsen and "Call Me Maybe?"

Also "Good Time" with Owl City (which counts as the second hit for both of them. ) I would count "One Foot" for Walk The Moon as a hit. It didn't rank high on the Hot 100, but was top 5 on the Billboard Rock chart and got a lot of radio airplay.

I kinda feel bad for Powter because this is an even better song that got airplay in 2006:

My first thought was "Baby Cakes" by 3 of a Kind. It was their debut single and went straight in at number one, famously keeping "Can't Stand Me Now" by the Libertines off the top spot when they were the most talked-about band in Britain. Then the followup single was inexplicably cancelled, they never released anything else, and were never heard from again.
Which is fine, because that song was f***ing shit.

They played at my University when that song was huge. I didn’t go because I have taste!
