"Butterfly"'s one of those earworms I will forever associate with finding on regular rotation whenever I switched to Kerrang from a morning's showing of Smackdown or Pokemon
RIP.

Yeah, I knew he had a lot of substance abuse issues. But 49 is way too damn young. RIP

To be honest, I’m shocked he lasted this long. Dude has had his demons for a very long time.

He'd been in a rough way for a long time. He did a performance on Youtube sometime last year, he looked unrecognizable due to all of the damage that his demons had done to him.
Echoing the statement that 49 is no age to go.

I had no clue he was that old. Neither did I, but then I remembered Crazy Town were relevant for roughly the 12-month period between summer '99 and summer 2000 and realised I'm old as f***. I'll echo the general sentiments of the thread. His addictions ran deep and were very well documented, and 49 is far too young.

Had no clue we were the same age. I figured he was 40 now tops. My then wife loved that one song they had. Bought the CD,when i hadd told her the rest of it wasnt like that one song and I could just burn her the one song. Week later she rips the Butterflu son off the cd and the CD sits I am bettting still now in her CD tower in the bed room,Between Celine Dion and Dance Music vol 8

My little cousin was obsessed with Butterfly, think it was the first CD he ever got. I will always associate this song with him. We aren’t close anymore, but anytime I hear this song I still think of him haha

A macabre fact: he's the fourth musician who played on that album to have died – three of the band itself and one of the session musicians.

That sucks.
I'm not going to lie and pretend I was a huge Crazy Town fan because the truth is even in my Nu Metal days I just never cared for them.
That said It still sucks that he died so young.

Really sad. You really see the worst side of addiction and how brutal and vicious it is. He really tried to get clean so many times. It truly is a demonic disease.
And, as said, he's had this massive issues for a very, very long time. In 2012, LA Weekly paid me to write a full on obituary for him to have ready to go when his overdose then was looking exceptionally dire. So glad he recovered then, was really rooting for him.
To give an idea for his actual age, he's a character in the 1993 Martin Short movie 'Clifford.'
I'll say they also made this legitimately great cover of Tha Alkaholiks' "Only When I'm Drunk." Like, for all the nu metal bands that made shitting rap covers and never really got what made hip-hop listenable, Crazy Town at least *got* this record and made a worthwhile track:
(here's the clean version so you can play it anywhere)
And Shifty had a legitimate second hit with "Starry Eyed Surprise"
Just such a bummer.

He's now the third member of that band to die young. Rust Epique died of a heart attack in 2004, and DJ AM died of an overdose in 2009 after basically never recovering from a plane crash.

It's actually so f**king bleak how many people who were on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew are dead now.

"Butterfly" is equal parts an absolutely terrible f***ing song and a guilty pleasure of mine. (The Chili Peppers sample probably helps)
RIP. It's always sad when people can't overcome their demons

It's always weird and sad when artists I remember from growing up die. I remember that Paul Oakenfold track being a mega hit, even though I wasn't really interested in that kind of music it was something I still heard a lot of.
I saw someone on the net describe them as having "embodied the goofy, sun-stunned, post-RHCP Sunset Strip L.A." and it made me look at them very differently, because I had never considered that before. It was always easy for me to view Crazy Town as a punchline because I wasn't there, but for someone a bit older than me who was, they were part of a world and an era that from the outside seemed wonderfully romantic and carefree and fun. I'm not a fan by any means but think I "get" it now.

I'm not going to lie and pretend to be a fan, because as far as I'm concerned...
Crazy Town were a monumentally shitty band of epic proportions.
But it sucks that he died at 49 and was exploited by a hack like Dr. Drew.

I was a fan of the Loveline radio show, but thinking back on my memories of that Celebrity Rehab show, you're absolutely right about Dr. Drew. Shifty Shellshock came off like he needed waaaaaay more help than some shitty reality show could give him, but nope, let's keep him around and see how many people will want to watch this train wreck once VH1 airs it.
Yeah, Crazy Town might've been one of the shittiest one hit wonders of their era, but he deserved so much better.
