Anorexia is a terrible way to llose weight Let's call it fasting. Holy crap ... I just glanced at your response, and for the briefest second, I thought the a in "fasting" was an i. I'll spare you the rest of the thoughts that went through my head. Anyway, thanks for all the tips, people! Keep 'em coming, because this is pretty important to me.

Congrats Cactus Matt. I was bitching to my doctor that I needed to lose weight and the first thing she said was to forget dieting but cut down on portions and really watch how MUCH I was eating. I indulged over Christmas and New Year's but since the 1st I'm down to me pre-holiday weight already.
I'm kind of a semi-vegetarian due to grad student poverty more than anything, but I don't think there are any weight loss benefits to it. All the vegetarians I know are pretty fat from overindulging the carbs.
Pushkilla is right, watch the booze, it adds up fast calorically. The good news is when you do drink you get buzzed instantly on an emptier stomach.

Don't drink ever. Alcohol is safe in moderation, but never helpful to weight loss. If you like soda, switch to diet.
Avoid refined carbs of any kind. You have to eat more to lose weight but have to make better choices.
Try to be balanced, having a meal with a good portion of protein, a starchy carb for energy, and a leafy vegetable. Protein helps keep muscle tissue healthy, starchy carbs (complex) are slow-digesting and keep you satisfied longer.
If you cut out too many calories, the body will reduce the amount of energy it allows itself to use in order to maintain an adequate supply for your basal metabolic rate. Eat frequently too, eating larger and less often will raise insulin levels and insulin leads to fat. Frequent meals keep insulin levels stabile and your body won't feel as though it is starving for energy.
If you can keep a good diet 6 days each week, treat yourself to a cheat day every week. It allows you the foods you like and keeps your body feeling as though you aren't starving it.

Diet soda has no calories, therefore drinking diet soda is a good way to cut calories and therefore lose weight.
BUT the fake sugar in diet soda tricks your body into thinking you are eating something that has calories, and since you aren't, your body craves more food. Studies have proven a link between diet soda and obesity.
So yeah, just skip soda all together I guess.

Ok man here you go...its soooooo much easier then people try to say it is to lose weight.
On the day after thanksgiving, I weighed in at a lifetime high of 222 pounds(i'm 6'0 tall) So I decided to get my butt in gear.
The first thing I did was go online and look up "circut training". Circut training is awesome because you are getting a muscle workout plus cardio at the same time. I now do this 3 times a week. Then I bought some new running shoes and since Thanksgiving have been running 3-4 miles a day 3 days a week( granted I am a former Cross Country runner so its not that hard for me but if running is really hard on you I would suggest doing things like playing basketball, raquetball or swimming at an advanced pace for no fewer then 20 minutes a day 3 days a week to go along with 3 days of circut training,) So total, excercise wise, thats 6 days a week or conditioning ranging from 20 to about 33 minutes at a time for doing it. Pretty do able huh?
As for the diet part. The first thing I did was google "daily calorie intake" That took me to a calorie calculator which asked me my age, daily excercise level, and height. Once I answered those questions, they told me the exact amount of calories I could eat daily to see weight loss.(2400 or so for a small, but consistent weight loss and 1800 or so for a quicker weight loss) I chose to stick with the 1800 calorie plan.
After that was the most important part, THE FIRST TWO MEALS OF THE DAY. My first meal has always been an healthy cereal and applesauce of somekind (but can really be any fruit). (Also, use 1 percent of skim milk on cereal). For my second meal, I have chosen to eat a power bar from gnc for my lunch which is about 250 calories. That leaves me with being aloud to eat basically anything I want for dinner because I am given over 1000 calories to work with.
The most important thing is developing a repetition/routine in the first two meals of the day you eat. For example, you may be grossed out by protein bars so do something like Eat a Turkey Sandwhich every day for lunch with Mustard and a piece of fruit and for Breakfast find something very healthy like oatmeal if cereal isnt for you. If you need a snack in between lunch and dinner or after dinner like I did at first, thats fine. My suggestion is almonds. They are very filling and you can have a large amount of them for a relatively low calorie count. But the good part of being good for the first two meals of the day is that you can have a good meal that doesnt have to be healthy to look forward to at night to eat.....
The results:
I have dropped down to 190 pounds currently so thats 32 pounds since the day after thanksgiving and have went from 19 percent body fat(yuck thats really bad for me) to currently 14.35 percent body fat. I am looking to get down to 165( looking to start my racing career sometime soon again).
So man, it sounds like you are in the almost same boat as I was in a month or so ago. It's not that hard to drop pounds in a healthy fashion, you just have to make a few daily changes. I reiterate, the first two meals of the day are the most important thing in starting a new lifestyle change so try your best to do that.
Good Luck! Hope this helps some!!

I see you dont have weight access, but you can and it will only cost you 20 bucks or so. All you need to do for circut training is buy two dumbbells(I use 15 pounds but your smaller so I would suggest 10 or 8 pound weights) On top of those , buy a cheap stopwatch and jump rope. These will only cost you 20 bucks or so combined. You can do the entire circut training in a basement or backyard minus the running, which is only 5 minutes so you can start your stopwatch and run out 2:30 and back 2:30. That shouldnt be bad on your sore Knees at all.

And also I second/third what everyone has said....Don't drink any pop. Alternatives I have found that taste very good surprisingly are crystal light packets(especially ice tea) and Propel. Both of thse taste awesome and only have 10-15 calories a serving along with far less sugar.

Two cost free things you can do
Get an adequate amount of sleep each night 8-10 hours and reduce stress levels in your life, learn some stress reducing technique's. When these two things are affecting you it causes the hormone "cortisol" to increase which causes fat retention in the abdominal area.
These of course may not affect you, but it's something to think about.
Oh, make a decision that you only eat your meals at the kitchen table, where no tv is visible. This includes snacks, beverages, breakfast, lunch & dinner. Avoid eating in front of the tv, in the car or anywhere where your mind is elsewhere when eating. Eating a bag of chips(for example) in front of the tv is the worst thing you can do, because you aren't paying attention to how much you are eating.
On average a meal should take a half an hour to eat, because it takes your body this long to shut off and tell you that you aren't hungry anymore. You can do this by putting your utensils down when chewing, take breaks, get up and take a short walk around the house. That's why when people scarf down a meal in say 10 minutes, you usually see them have seconds, because there appetite hasn't shut down yet.
If you can't use cardio equipment I suggest, going for a walk, but every minute go all out running, and alternate between walking running for thirty minutes. You can do this with swimming and biking as well by going slower than faster for one minute intervals. You burn far more calories this way and continue to hours after this routine as compared to say someone who runs on a treadmill at a normal pace. This exercise helps burn fat without burning muscle which regular cardio can eventually do over a period of time.
If the above interests you but your unsure exactly what I mean, message me and I will try to explain it better. I sometimes confuse people with my writing. lol

I joined the YMCA at the start of December. I've only been there once because I don't have the energy to go again. Big mistake. Moderation is the key to everything. My tips are: 1. Set sensible goals. 2. Drink lots of water. 3. Eat lean meats, like turkey and some hams. 4. Pick one bad thing from your diet, such as cheeses (low fat swiss is OK), nuts (nuts are supposedly good by some people's standards; not to those who want to lose weight), mayonase, avocado etc. and eliminate it for the week. At the end of the week, keep it eliminated and add something else on the no go list. This way, it is a lot easier to get bad things out of your diet and it will help you keep focused. -Ian
