So, apart from Smash Brothers, another brawler is set to hit the Wii this winter, that being the third installment in Atari's Godzilla series for home consoles, Godzilla: Unleashed. Drawing inspiration from the excellent Smash Brothers thread already here on the forums, if anyone besides myself is actually interested in this game, I'm gonna keep this thread running to talk about everything confirmed, speculated upon, etc, for the game. Feedback will be appreciated, as if nobody cares I'll probably start cutting myself again not update the thread.
Here's what we know so far.
Title: Godzilla Unleashed
Developer: Pipeworks
Publisher: Atari
Platforms: Nintendo Wii (This is the version I intend to focus on), Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Sony PlayStation 2
Release Date: Wii: November 13 (rumored) 2007. DS: TBA. PSP: TBA. (No info has been revealed on the PSP version and there are rumors it may be canceled.) PS2: TBA
Storyline:
Not much is known about the game's story as of yet. What we do know is that Earth is in danger, with strange, multi-colored crystals appearing from the ground in Earth's major cities, causing natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic erruptions, and attracting several giant monsters, both native to Earth and from outer space. The game will feature a branching storyline with choices made by the player over the course of several days. There will be "manga" style artwork to illustrate the story as it goes.
Factions: Something new to the Godzilla game series, the story will involve four factions of monsters: Earth Defenders, Global Defense Force, Mutants, and Aliens. The Earth Defenders are monsters born on the Earth who's primary purpose is to protect the planet (but not nessacarily the humans who live on it, though they may aid them indirectly). The GDF will be comprised of giant fighting mechas created by the people of Earth to protect the populations of their cities. The Mutants ally themselves with no one and are looking out for their own interests, while the Aliens, and those allied with them look to take over the Earth, or destroy it while trying. While each monster is assigned a starting Faction, you can influence your relationship with others as you go.
For instance, suppose you are playing as Godzilla 2000 (Earth Defender), and you come across Kiryu (GDF) battling Gigan (Alien). You can do as Godzilla would probably do, and assist Kiryu in fighting off Gigan, thus improving your status with the GDF, but pissing off the Aliens. You can turn evil and assist Gigan and do the exact opposite, or, you can just sit back and let them kick the crap out of each other and see what happens.
Controls: Not too terribly much is known about the controls at this time, although it's said that using the Nunchuck and Wiimote, you can attack in all directions at once, all while moving. For instance, Godzilla could be firing his atomic breath in one direction, while slashing his claws in another, and swinging his tail in yet a third, all at the same time.
Critical Mass: Critical Mass is something new to this game as well. Basically, your monster (or an enemy monster) can absorb different powers from the crystals that will be seen all over the levels...maybe more health, higher defense, new abilities, a strong finishing move, etc. But too much power can corrupt your monster. Not too much else is known yet but it sounds very interesting.
Playable Monsters: Atari has announced that there will be 23 playable monsters. Below are those who are confirmed thus far, as well as what faction they represent.
1 - Godzilla 2000
Faction: Earth Defenders
Height: 100 meters
Weight: 55,000 tons
Powers: High powered atomic blast from mouth, regenerative capabilities, excellent swimmer
A curious inclusion, as this version of Godzilla only saw limited screen time in the actual movies, but was the most recent one to grace American theatrical screens. Most fans hope there will be a second version of Godzilla to choose from as well.
2 - Mothra
Faction: Earth Defenders
Height: 20 meters
Weight: 28,000 tons
Powers: Able to spin silk from the mouth to web up enemies (Larva), able to encase self in cocoon to transform into Adult form (Larva), Releases clouds of poisionous scales from her wings that nullify opponent's beam weapons (Adult) Able to create hurricane force winds from wings (Adult), able to fire a stinger from tail end (Adult)
This version of Mothra appears to be a modified Heisei version (The 1984-1995 Godzilla series) however nothing is mentioned about the eye/antenna lasers that version featured. Not sure if she'll have them in the game or not.
3 - Destoroyah
Faction: Mutants
Height: 110 meters
Weight: 78,000 tons
Powers: Breathing micro-oxygen attacks at his enemies (basically removes the oxygen in whatever it hits, destroying its molecular stability), the powerful "Horn Katana" that eminates from the horn on his head (a red laser horn that cuts deeply through anything it hits)
Destoroyah was intended to be Godzilla's final opponent. 1995's Godzilla vs Destoroyah even featured the tagline "Godzilla Dies!" on its movie posters. True enough, Godzilla did die, but he took Destoroyah with him in an atomic meltdown after becoming enraged after witnessing Destoroyah murder his son, Godzilla Junior. Godzilla would return in 1999, after Sony's disasterous attempt, "Godzilla", in 1998.
4 - Gigan (Final Wars Edition)
Faction: Alien
Height: 95 meters
Weight: 47,000 tons
Powers: Buzzsaw located in chest cavity, able to fire an energy beam from his eye visor, can fire grappling cables from his claws (Unsure if this will be used in the game however)
Another curious inclusion is the Final Wars version of Gigan. The Showa (The 1954-1975 Godzilla series) version battled Godzilla twice, allying himself with King Ghidora and Megalon. This version was an ancient enemy of Mothra, who's mummified remains came back to life to terrorize the world in modern times.
5 - Megalon
Faction: Alien
Height: 88 meters
Weight: 64,000 tons
Powers: Able to fire a laser with electric properties from his horn, fires explosive napalm balls from his mouth, capable of drilling underground and burrowing with his drill hands.
Megalon had the misfortune of having his effort against Godzilla, "Godzilla vs Megalon" spoofed on Mystery Science Theater 3000, which also featured the lone appearence of Jet Jaguar. He's actually an Earth monster, but has allied himself with the Aliens in an effort to wipe out humanity.
6 - Anguirus (Also called Angilas)
Faction: Earth Defenders
Height: 80 meters
Weight: 54,000 tons
Powers: Can curl into a ball and roll about, doing major damage. Hard spiked carapace used to damage enemies. Capable of emitting a "sonic roar" (ability made up for the games, never used in the movies)
Despite being the first monster Godzilla EVER faced in combat, as seen in 1955's "Godzilla Raids Again" Godzilla and Anguirus became best friends later on, and teamed up together to save the Earth in "Godzilla vs. Gigan". Anguirus is best known as a scrappy monster with more guts than brains.
7 - Kiryu
Faction: GDF
Height: 100 meters
Weight: 66,600 tons
Powers: Armor plating, limited flight abilities, weaponry arsenal includes homing missles, electrical laser discharge, and the Absolute Zero cannon: A freezing beam fired from a chest compartment.
Kiryu is the third incarnation of MechaGodzilla, this one was actually built over the bones and remains of the first Godzilla that attacked Tokyo in 1954 before being killed by the Oxygen Destroyer. As such, it retained its memories of its life as Godzilla and is prone to having flashbacks and going berzerk. Still, it was one of the more effective weapons to be used by mankind against Godzilla.
8 - King Seesar
Faction: Earth Defenders
Height: 100 meters
Weight: 75,000 tons
Powers: Excellent hand to hand fighter, able to absorb energy from opponent's beam attacks through his eyes and fire them back at the source.
King Seesar first appeared in 1974 as Godzilla's tag team partner against the original MechaGodzilla. He is an ancient monster god who protected the Azumi tribe, and can only be reawakened when they are in danger. He did not reappear until 2004's Godzilla Final Wars, where he was manipulated by aliens into opposing Godzilla.
9 - King Ghidora
Faction: Alien
Height: 120 meters
Weight: 80,000 tons
Powers: Fires "gravity beams" from all three mouthes, capable of long space travel and flight, able to withstand a tremendous amount of damage
King Ghidora has always been one of the most powerful monsters in the Godzilla universe. In the original Godzilla series, Godzilla could never defeat him one on one, and needed the assistance of Gorosaurus, Angilas, Rodan, Minya, Mothra and Speiga to finally defeat him once and for all in "Destroy All Monsters"
10 - Krystalak
Faction: Mutant
Height: 76 meters
Weight: 41,000 tons
Powers: Extreme resistance to beam/energy weapons, able to expel streams of razor sharp crystals
Not much is known about Krystalak, except for his crappy design and lame name, as he was created by Pipeworks solely for this game. Surely he will tie in with the crystals that are mentioned in the game's story.
11 - Obsidius
Faction: Mutant
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Powers: It don't matter. None of this matters.
Obsidius is a living rock monster who is capable of spitting lava from his mouth. Beyond that, we know nothing, as he is another crappy original monster made for that game.
12 - Jet Jaguar
Faction: GDF
Height: 90 Meters (Variable)
Weight: 38,000 Tons
Powers: Self aware robot with a huge capacity for learning, able to self-program himself to adapt, able to both grow and shrink in size for a limited amount of time
Despite only being featured in one movie ("Godzilla vs Megalon") Jet Jaguar is one of Toho's most remembered characters, by hardcore and casual Godzilla fans alike thanks to his goofy design, more than a passing resembelance to Ultraman, and an appearence on Mystery Science Theater 3000.
13 - Fire Rodan
Faction: Earth Defender
Height: 70 Meters
Weight: 24,000 Tons
Powers: Extreme resistance to fire and heat, able to emit a heat ray from his mouth, capable of extremely fast flight, skilled melee fighter with beak and claw attacks.
The 1990's redesigned Rodan appeared in 1993's "Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla" where he sacraficed his life force to revive Godzilla, who had been killed by MechaGodzilla. Although Godzilla and Rodan had fought on the same side before, they had always been rivals, only teaming together when nessacary to survive.
14 - Baragon
Faction: Earth Defender
Height: 60 Meters
Weight: 34,000 Tons
Powers: Special affinity for the Earth, draws power from being in contact with the planet, able to tunnel and burrow, able to generate earthquakes and volcanic erruption, able to breathe fire, tremendous jumper.
Much like Godzilla battled King Kong in 1962, Baragon was first called into action to fight another Western monster, Frankenstein, in the campy Toho classic "Frankenstein Conquers The World" also known as "Frankenstein vs Baragon". Baragon would then make a brief cameo in Destroy All Monsters, but did not appear again until 2001's "GMK: Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidora, Giant Monster All-Out Attack!" where he was killed by a new, evil all-powerful Godzilla. The original Baragon suit was modified several times to portray various Ultraman foes before it finally fell apart.
15 - Titanosaurus
Faction: Mutants
Height: 115 Meters
Weight: 61,000 Tons
Powers: Greatly skilled melee fighter, skilled swimmer, able to generate hurricane winds by fanning his tail.
Titanosaurus has appeared in only one Toho film, 1975's "The Terror of MechaGodzilla" and has the honor of being, along with MechaGodzilla, the last opponents faced by Godzilla in the original 1954-1975 Godzilla series. The original concept for Titanosaurus was to be TWO living dinosaurs, known as Titans, who combined into one to form Titanosaurus to battle Godzilla, but this part of the creature's origin was scrapped, and he was always Titanosaurus.
16 - Mecha-King Ghidora
Faction: GDF
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Powers: Retains King Ghidora's ability to fire gravity bolts from the organic heads, and fires a tri-laser from the metallic middle head, able to fire paralyzing electric tasers, equipped with a force field that absorbs energy from enemy's beam weapons when activated.
Appearing in 1991's "Godzilla vs King Ghidora", MKG was actually designed by the Earth Union in the distant future (After Godzilla killed King Ghidora in 1992 AD) to send back in time to stop Godzilla from destroying Japan. To explain his existance in G:U along side present-day King Ghidora, his biography has been altered to claim that an Earth Defender (Likely Godzilla) defeated King Ghidora in an alternate future and he was sent back in time from there.
17 - Megaguirus
Faction: Mutants
Height: Unknown
Weight: Unknown
Powers: Can absorb monsters' energy through the stinger on her tail and fire it back out at them, is a big bug who pretty much sucks, her movie sucks, and I wish her character spot had gone to Zilla.
Other characters will include Orga, MechaGodzilla 1974, MechaGodzilla 1993, Biollante and Space Godzilla. I will update when more info is available.
