38. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (Genesis) Zombies Ate My Neighbors is a run and gun video game for the Super NES and Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis platforms. The game was produced by LucasArts as a comical tribute to both classic and schlocky horror films of the 1950s and 1960s. A sequel entitled Ghoul Patrol was released in 1994, but was not as well received as its predecessor and no further sequels were produced. A similar game, Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia, contains references to Zombies Ate My Neighbors. GamePro ranked Zombies Ate My Neighbors #9 in their "top ten games you never heard of" list in their 200th issue. Recently, Zombies Ate My Neighbors was given a rating on ESRB's website, which means the game may appear on the Wii's Virtual Console.. It has since been listed on several gaming sites such as 1UP.com and IGN indicating an impending release. No official statement has been issued on a scheduled release date. The player chooses between two teenage characters, Zeke and Julie, or both in two-player mode. They navigate suburban neighborhoods, shopping malls, pyramids, and other areas, destroying a variety of horror-movie monsters, including vampires, werewolves, huge demonic babies, and the game's flagship, zombies. In each of the 48 stages (excluding the bonus levels) the goal is to rescue the surviving neighbors, at which point a magical door opens that will take the player to the next stage. However, if the player is not careful, any enemy in the game will kill the neighbors, preventing them from being saved. At least one neighbor must be saved from each level to progress to the next. The game is lost if all of the neighbors in a certain stage are killed or if the player(s) lose all of their lives. Scoring points earns players more neighbors to save and extra lives.

37. Dynamite Headdy (Genesis) Dynamite Headdy is a video game released in 1994 by Sega and produced by Treasure Co. Ltd. It was released on the Sega Mega Drive system, with ports to the Sega Game Gear and Sega Master System. A port for the Sega 32X was planned, but due to the system's low popularity, the port was canceled. On July 30, 2007, it was released for Virtual Console. The style of the game is platform/action. In the game you play as the star puppet Headdy who can attack his enemies by shooting his detachable head at them. Dynamite Headdy is one of the 3 games included with Gunstar Heroes: Treasure Box Collection, a compilation of Treasure-produced Mega Drive games for the Playstation 2. Headdy, the central protagonist of the game, is the star of the Treasure Theatre production of Dynamite Headdy. He has come to North Town from the country in order to visit his friends HeadCase, HangMan and Beau, but arrives to find that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is in the midst of attacking the puppet town to select which of the peaceful toys should live and which should be converted into his evil minions. Headdy is captured by the Robo-Collector and rejected by D.D.'s forces, and is dropped into the dust cargo to be thrown into the incinerator. However, Headdy escapes the clutches of Dark Demon's minions and sets off to defeat the evil king. However, trouble is afoot. Not only is the puppet world filled with Dark Demon's minions, but to reach the evil overlord's castle Headdy must defeat Dark Demon's Keymasters, who serve as the king's elite guard. To make matters worse, Headdy is followed by his lifelong rival Trouble Bruin, a puppet jealous of Headdy's success. Bruin wants to be the star instead of Headdy, and will stop at nothing to get rid of him. The game is played over a series of "scenes" and "acts", the end of which is often typified by a big boss battle. Headdy's special ability is his launchable head. This can be fired in eight directions: up, down, left, right, and the four diagonals in-between. Launching it at enemies can damage or destroy them. His head can also be used to hold on to a "HangMan", a character that acts like a hook. By grabbing a HangMan with your head, the player can then use it to hurl themselves in its direction, as if connected by an elastic band. Headdy can also swap his head for a special head, if he attacks a HeadCase. Depending on the symbol that the HeadCase is showing, Headdy will get a different head with a different special power. Scattered across the levels are a number of Secret Bonus Points. These can be collected by performing a strange or skilled action, such as finding a hidden item or defeating an enemy that is difficult to reach.

36. Ecco The Dolphin (Genesis) Ecco the Dolphin is a video game released in 1992 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. The central character, Ecco, is a bottlenose dolphin controlled by the player through a progression of side-scrolling aquatic levels. The game was conceived and designed by Ed Annunziata and developed by Novotrade International, and spawned a series of sequels. It has recently been released for Nintendo's Virtual Console and Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade. The gameplay is essentially side-scrolling, with horizontal, diagonal and vertical movement. Attacking enemies is accomplished by making Ecco ram into them at high speeds. Swimming could be made progressively faster by tapping a certain button, and the speed could be maintained by holding it down. Players can perform a purely aesthetic spin in the air when jumping out of the water. Two features of the game played on actual dolphin habits; one button causes Ecco to sing, allowing him to speak with other cetaceans and interact with certain objects. The same button is used for echolocation; holding it down would cause the song to return, generating a map of the area. Additionally, Ecco, being a mammal, has to surface periodically for air, or else find an air vent. Ecco would drown if his "air meter" ran out. His health was measured by a separate meter; it was depleted by enemies or when his air meter had run out, and it is recharged by eating fish, "singing" to clams, or, later in the game, singing to special statues or crystals called "Glyphs". Ecco's song could be optionally "upgraded" at two points in the game; one upgrade allowed Ecco's song to be used in combination with a charge as a long-range weapon, and the other temporarily disoriented sharks and made minor enemies freeze temporarily. Several levels contain enormous crystals called "Glyphs", which would respond in different ways if Ecco touches or sings to them. Some blocked paths, and a "Key-Glyph" had to be found in such cases to pass. Others gave information, and a few in later levels would replenish health/air and give Ecco temporary invulnerability. The story begins with young Ecco as he and his pod enjoy life in their home bay. One podmate gives an in-game message challenging Ecco to see how high in the air he can jump. Once the player does this, a mysterious waterspout forms and sucks up all marine life in the bay; Ecco, however, is stuck in the air until the storm passes. Upon leaving the bay to search for his pod, Ecco comes across dolphins from other pods who tell him the entire sea is in chaos, and that all marine creatures had felt the storm. A tip from an orca sends Ecco on a journey to the frozen waters of the Arctic to find a wise blue whale named Big Blue. The Big Blue tells him such storms had been occurring every 500 years and directs him to an older and wiser being known as the Asterite. Ecco leaves the frozen north and journeys to a deep cavern where he finds the Asterite, the oldest creature on Earth. An enormous double helix consisting of globes, the Asterite communicates telepathically, although in an animation seen in the Sega CD version of The Tides of Time it appears to communicate by vibration of its globes; as the Big Blue says, "We feel great energy of thought from the Asterite, but it will not sing to us." Although it has the power to aid Ecco, it is incomplete; one of its globes has gone missing. It offers to help if Ecco finds the missing globe; this can only be found by traveling back in time using a machine built by the ancient Atlanteans. Ecco travels to the sunken city of Atlantis, where he discovers the time machine and an ancient library. He learns the cause of the storm; it was a harvest of Earth's waters that was conducted every 500 years by an alien species known as the Vortex. The Vortex had lost their ability to make their own food; and so, every 500 years, they would harvest from the waters of Earth. Learning this, Ecco activates the time machine and traveled 55 million years into Earth's past. The developers originally planned for Ecco to meet ancient cetaceans, before they came into the sea, but the art for these scenes were not completed due to time constraints. However, their intended messages can still be found hidden in the prehistoric levels. Ecco locates the Asterite in the past but is immediately attacked by it; the young Asterite was considerably less trusting than its older self. Forced into battle, Ecco manages to dislodge a globe from it. For whatever reason, this opens a time portal and Ecco is flung back into his present. In a paradoxical twist, the globe the Asterite had lost was the same one that Ecco had stolen from it. The now whole Asterite grants Ecco the power to turn his sonar into a deadly weapon against the Vortex, as well as the ability to breathe underwater. It instructs him to use the time machine to travel back in time to the hour of the harvest. This time, he manages to be sucked into the waterspout with his pod. The final three levels are a constantly-scrolling obstacle course, collectively called "The Machine" ("Vortex Machine" in the PC version). The third-to-last level, "The Tube", had Ecco dodging obstacles as he travelled up the waterspout, with the level scrolling progressively faster and throwing progressively more enemies in his path. The second last level, titled "Welcome To The Machine" (a reference to the Pink Floyd song)[citation needed], was an ever-moving maze for processing the harvest that would kill Ecco if he could not keep up with it. Past this is the mastermind of the harvest, the Vortex Queen, in the level "The Last Fight". Keeping with the high difficulty level set by the rest of the game, losing to the Vortex Queen means repeating the long and difficult previous level. Eventually, the Vortex Queen is vanquished and Ecco rescues his pod. Traveling back through The Machine and down the waterspout, the dolphins rejoice and vow to sing praise of Ecco's bravery forever.

35. NBA Jam Tournament Edition (Genesis) NBA Jam Tournament Edition (commonly referred to as NBA Jam T.E.) is a basketball arcade game created by Midway in 1994 as a sequel to the hit game NBA Jam. The game featured rosters from the 1993-94 NBA season. The console versions follow the 1994-95 NBA season, with updated rosters and team logos. Impressively, the entire game was coded in assembly and features more new features and easter eggs combined with the same gameplay as it's predecessor. Console versions were well known for featuring tons of easter eggs; the home versions of Jam T.E. even allowed you to use then-U.S. President Bill Clinton, then-First Lady Hillary Clinton, or then-Vice President Al Gore (and Atari's Vice President of Software Development Leonard Tramiel on the Atari Jaguar version). The early arcade versions even allowed players to choose from hidden Mortal Kombat characters (Raiden, Reptile and Sub-Zero).

34. Shadow Dancer: The Secret Of Shinobi (Genesis) Shadow Dancer is an arcade game, developed and published by Sega in 1989. It is the arcade sequel to the original Shinobi. A heavily altered Genesis version of the game was released, titled Shadow Dancer: The Secret of the Shinobi. The plot, and even the main character's identity, varies between versions of the game, although the actual game has no in-game storyline. In the original Japanese plot of the Mega Drive version, the main character is Joe Musashi's son, Hayate. Hayate and Yamato sets out to avenge Kato's death after he is killed by a mysterious organization called the Union Lizard. In the English localization of Mega Drive/Genesis game, the main character is actually Musashi himself (instead of his son) and Kato is made into one of Musashi's students, who is also killed in this version of the plot. Yamato is made into Kato's pet dog, which Musashi adopts after his original owner's death. The gameplay is very similar to previous Shinobi games except the dog would add to the ninja weapon arsenal. When given the right opportunity, the dog would automatically attack the enemies. Essentially the dog ties up the enemy, buying Hayate time to get closer for the kill. In this version of Shadow Dancer, you can press down and attack to manually summon the dog out. When the dog is hurt, it would shrink into a puppy sized dog incapable of attacking until the next powerup. It was not possible to summon the dog while standing up. In the Sega Genesis version The dog can actually commit "suicide". On the bridge level jump up and down repeatedly having the dog follow you and he will eventually jump off the bridge and respawn moments later. Bombs are scattered across the stage waiting to be disarmed. The goal of each stage is to disarm a certain number of bombs before facing the boss. Hayate's standard weapons are an unlimited supply of throwing stars, along with punches and kicks when attacking at close range. He can also perform "ninja magic," which may be used only once per stage and kills (or damages, in the case of bosses) all enemies on the screen. The game contains 4 rounds divided into sub sections totaling 15 stages. This version of Shadow Dancer featured bonus stages where Hayate will go up against a group of ninjas climbing down a building in the style of a first person shooter. The bonus stage is the same on all the ports except for the Sega Genesis. The Mega Drive/Genesis version (retitled Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi) is fairly different, to the point that it is sometimes considered more of a sequel. The Mega Drive/Genesis version was also ported as one of the games in the Sega Genesis Collection, released on both the PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation 2 in November, 2006 (but only on the American version).

33. Road Rash 2 (Genesis) Road Rash 2 is the name of a motorcycle-racing video game by Electronic Arts, in which the player participates in violent illegal street races. Presented in a third-person view similar to Hang-On, the player competes in road races, and must finish in the top 3 places in every race in order to proceed to the next level. As levels progress, the opponents ride faster, fight harder and the tracks are longer and more dangerous. Placing in each race gives a certain amount of money which increases considerably subsequently as levels progressed. This money allows the player to buy faster bikes which are needed to stay competitive. The game is over if the player can't pay for the repairs when their motorcycle is wrecked, or can't pay the fine for being arrested. There are many cheat codes available for this game, including one which gives you the Wild Thing 2000 --- a superbike not normally available.

32. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis) Michael Jackson's Moonwalker is the name of several video games created by Sega in 1990 that incorporate the personage of and were co-developed by Michael Jackson. The arcade version and home versions differ in terms of gameplay, but the story and concept remain constant. The story, which is taken from the Moonwalker music video, follows Michael, using various music and dance related abilities, on a quest to save kidnapped children from the hands of the evil "Mr. Big". The games incorporated synthesized versions of the musician's hits, such as "Beat It" and "Smooth Criminal". The games have now achieved cult status and are remembered for being a memorable point in Jackson's change to a different stage persona from Thriller, to Bad. Moonwalker was first developed into an arcade video game by Sega with the help of Jackson which was released on the Sega System 18 hardware. This game also suffered from Sega's suicide battery on its arcade board. The arcade has distinctively different gameplay from its console counterparts, focusing more on beat 'em up gameplay elements rather than platform. Mr. Big, an insidious drug dealer, has kidnapped children for no apparent reason. Michael, in an effort to save the children, goes after Mr. Big, and eventually discovers his plot to take over the world using a large laser cannon built on the Moon. Each level begins with a small comic book-style presentation of the ongoing conflict between Mr. Big and Michael, intending to show a transition from one level's setting to the next. These cut-scenes, however, do not reveal any additional plot details. At the conclusion of the game.. more of the story is revealed, which is also highlighted by some as adding to the peculiarity of the title.: Mr. Big's evil plot has been foiled with the destruction of his deadly doomsday weapon - the gigantic laser cannon. And with his massive fortress reduced to cinders, he is no longer a threat to mankind. But what of Michael? All that is known that he was last seen soaring away from the crumbling enemy stronghold, heading toward the distant horizon. However, his profile in the SEGA Dreamcast game "Space Channel 5" states that he once saved the world from evil using his "dance powers", this is most likely a reference to Moonwalker and perhaps his role in Channel 5 is somewhat of a sequel? And the children that he saved? Well... They're smiling, because deep down in their hearts, they know that Michael will return one day to share with them another wondrous and magical adventure... The game is essentially an isometric beat-em-up, although Jackson attacks with magic powers instead of physical contact, and has the ability to shoot magic power at enemies instead of getting close enough for a melee attack. A map of the stage is shown before it begins, and after which, Jackson must get from the start to the end without losing all his health, rescuing all the children and defeating all the enemies along the way. The game can also be played multiplayer; if the cabinet supports it, up to three people can play simultaneously. All three players play as Jackson, dressed in his suit from the "Smooth Criminal" music video. The first player wears a white suit and hat, with a blue shirt; the second player's character dons a scarlet outfit with a black shirt; the third player's character is dressed in black, with a red shirt. The characters all have armbands: red for black outfit, black for red outfit, and black for white outfit. Dance Magic: Arguably the most memorable feature, Sega takes the concept of the "smart bomb" or "screen zapper" and changes it to the form of dancing, in a special attack termed "Dance Magic". Once activated, a heavenly spotlight shines on the player, and the player starts to dance several of the high-energy moves that have become Jackson's hallmarks. All of the standard enemies - henchmen, gangsters, guards, robots - start dancing with the player and are destroyed at the end of the dance routine (ostensibly because they can't keep up with Jackson's dance moves). However, bosses do not dance, but do take a significant amount of damage. Any captive children on-screen at the time Dance Magic is activated are not harmed. There are three different dance routines that may be performed, and the player starts with one to three of these attacks per credit (depending on how the machine is set up). Bubbles: Part of the peculiarity of this game comes from this unusual power-up. Bubbles the chimpanzee, Michael's real-life pet, appears in each level. Once collected or rescued, the chimp transforms Michael into a robotic version of the pop singer that has the ability to shoot laser bursts and absorb significantly more damage.

31. Snatcher (CD) Snatcher is a cyberpunk-themed adventure game. It has gained a small cult following due to its mature storytelling, adult themes and (in later versions) voice acting. It was heavily influenced by various sci-fi and noir films, most notably Blade Runner (main character and city views) and The Terminator (robots). Also of note is the great similarity between the game's premise and that of an obscure 1986 TV movie called "Anihilator" (Which also deals with the concept of killer robots that replace existing people). Snatcher was written and directed by Hideo Kojima. It was developed and published by Konami. Originally released in Japan for the NEC PC-8801 and MSX2 in 1988, it was remade for the PC-Engine in 1992 and ported to the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996. It was released for the Sega CD in North America and its counterpart, the Mega CD in Europe, in 1994, in what is the game's first and only official English version. A series of projects yet to be announced are currently in production and are tentatively titled Project 'S'; for now only a radio drama has been confirmed. On June 6, 1991 (1996 in the English version), a chemical weapon known as Lucipher-Alpha under development in Chernoton, Russia, is released into the atmosphere, resulting in the death of 80% of the Eurasian population. The contaminated area becomes uninhabitable for a decade, when Lucipher-Alpha mutates into a non-lethal form. This tragic event later becomes known as "the Catastrophe". Fifty years later, a breed of artificial life-forms or bioroids known as "snatchers" began appearing in the artificial island of Neo Kobe City, killing their victims and taking their place in society. Nobody knows exactly what they are or where they come from. As Gillian Seed, an amnesiac working for an Anti-Snatcher task force called J.U.N.K.E.R., the player's goal is to track down the source of the snatchers and discover Gillian's mysterious connections with them. The first and only official English version made, the Sega (Mega) CD version was made specifically for a western audience in North America and Europe and was never released in Japan. The game is mostly identical to the PC-Engine version in terms of graphics and contents. The game's script was translated by Scott T. Hards and localized by Jeremy Blaustein (who later translated Metal Gear Solid). Changes were made to the storyline (the date of the Catastrophe was moved five years ahead to keep the story fresh for English-speaking players unaware of the previous Japanese releases and several keywords were changed) and some of the graphics were altered as well. The character Katrina Gibson was also made to look a little older (she is 18 in the Sega CD version and 14 in the PC-Engine one), mostly so that Gillian doesn't come off as a pedophile, especially with one certain scene where he catches her naked in his shower. You can also snatch her underwear (temporarily) in the PC Engine version. Overall, the game is only lightly censored, the most prominent change being some nudity: in the Japanese version, players actually saw Katrina naked when Gillian "caught" her; in the U.S. version, we hear her scream off-screen, then she sprays Gillian in the face with hot water. Another scene in Plato's cavern was censored; Gillian can find a porno video in the market, and when he watches it, moaning can be heard and Metal Gear flips out. This was in the PC Engine version but not in the Sega CD version. Also, in one scene where Gillian kills a female snatcher is censored; in the Japanese version, her dress rips when she lands, exposing her breasts. This doesn't occur in the U.S. version; her dress stays put. One other mildly censored scene was when Katrina's dog Alice was disembowled and hurled through the window of her house; in the PC Engine version, she bleeds out onto the carpet and is twitching. In the Sega CD version, the graphic was made static. It has been speculated that entering "KONAMI" at the "Enter Name" prompt in the JORDAN computer will completely uncensor the game, as JORDAN emits a chime and does not specify that the name could not be found. However, it has been ascertained that this code does nothing. This version also includes two exclusive scenes (including an extended ending sequence) recorded specifically for the English version which serves to cover some of the loose ends left by the Japanese version. It is also the only version to include light gun support. Despite this, the game did not enjoy the same success outside Japan and was considered a commercial failure, selling only a few thousand units in North America according to an interview with Blaustein. The failure is mainly attributed to a lack of promotion from Konami's part and Sega's waning support of the Sega CD add-on in favor of the then recently-released 32X and the forthcoming Saturn. Despite this, the game became the most sought after title for the platform since its release, usually scoring up to hundreds of dollars on eBay.
