Didn't see this posted,
- Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, the new Judd Apatow-John C. Reilly comedy about the life and times of a machete-wielding Johnny Cash type, seemed sure to die a quick death after selling only $4.1 million worth of opening-weekend tickets, per studio estimates compiled Sunday by Exhibitor Relations.
"It is horrible," Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock said Sunday, agreeing that the film's eighth-place debut and $1,547 per-screen average was just not good. "Parody is a tough sell, but even The Comebacks opened stronger than this one."
Parody is a tough sell? Well they keep making them, and this was an Apatow film. I'm kinda surprised this film didn't do better. not that I thought it was gonna be any good, but this seemed like it would be bigger.
For the record I don't like Apatow or anything he's done. Seems everyone wants to get their opinion out there, so there's mine.

There was bound to be Apatow backlash sooner or later. He can only direct/write/produce so many comedies in a two year span before people just get sick of it.
I also feel, and I hate saying it, that it would have done better with a bigger name. Nothing against John C Reilly who I love to watch, but the average person doesn't really know who he is.

I'm a much bigger fan of TV Apatow than Film Apatow.
Sweeney Todd didn't do so swell, either.

I probably would've seen Sweeney Todd several times by now if my damn town's theatre had gotten it. But this town is stupid, so when I get paid I'll probably travel outta town just to see it.

Sweeney's not here, either, much to my chagrin.
And I'm not surprised this bombed (though I've heard from several sources that it's funny) - they took a Will Ferrell movie and cast his side-kick in the lead instead. The "Steve Carrell" maneuver doesn't always work out. (Even for Steve Carrell, apparently.)

Sweeney didn't open in too many theaters. I know it's not playing here, I was dissapointed.

That's a horrible opening weekend. I can't believe that one movie starring Champ from "Anchorman" had a better opening weekend than this one. Especially when you consider they've been marketing the hell outta this flick since before Thanksgiving.

This doesn't shock me. The first time I even saw the trailer, I just thought "Ugh."

Sweeney didn't open in too many theaters. I know it's not playing here, I was dissapointed. I had to go about an hour away to see it. It only opened in about 1,000 theaters.

That's odd; at first I thought this movie looked awful, but the more commercials they've shown, the more funny they've brought, so I thought this would catch on better.
Seems like an odd couple weeks for movies, anyway.
Which reminds me, my list of "Stuff I need to catch before its out of theaters" is getting completely out of hand.

With HUGE hits such as Alvin and Legend, I knew any of these movies this last week was gonna bomb. Guaranteed if Walk Hard was released lets say in January or so, it would be a smash.

Haven't seen the film yet, but when I saw the trailer I thought to myself, "I'm glad they're taking a risk with Reilly. They could have gone the easy route and tried to cast Will Ferrell in this role." Now I can see the studios saying, "damn it, we should have had Will Ferrell play the part." Which sucks cause I thought this was a worthwhile risk.

To be fair, it looks dumb as hell. I wish they'd get off this parody kick, I really would. It cheapens a fun genre.

I don't understand the negativity from people who haven't seen the movie. It's not "another parody" in the spirit of Date Movie, where every joke involves someone farting or being hit in the nuts. This is a parody that we haven't seen since Airplane.

I've heard from some friends that it was funny. I love Apatow and while I didn't expect this to be a smash I didn't think it would bomb.
It actually looks like a good, smart parody.

Maybe nobody went to the movies this week. The holidays are usually a busy time of the year.
