Have you ever had a game you just couldn't beat, then years later, you decide to sit down with it long enough to beat it? That was me this week, thanks to getting a day off.
The game: Strider
I first fell in love with this game back in 1990 when it came out on the Genesis and NES. I had the NES game, but had played the arcade version, which was what came out on the Genesis. A couple years later, I bought a Genesis and borrowed the game from a friend of mine. I couldn't beat it, but I loved everything about the game. I eventually bought a used copy of the game for myself, but even then, I couldn't beat it.
Years later, I picked up Strider 2 for the PS1, which had the original game as an unlockable. Even then, I couldn't beat it. Earlier this year, I picked up Capcom's Collection Volume 2 for the PS2, which also has it. That's what brings me to last night. I had no beer, the Mrs wasn't in the mood, and there wasn't much on TV. I went downstairs to the man cave to find something to play. For some reason, I decided I was going to beat Strider. Thanks to unlimited continues, it was possible, but Jesus Birthday Christ was it a chore! I must've spent 30 minutes on the last guy alone. 45 seconds later, the credits ended and the game started over. Totally not worth it, but games didn't have the epic endings we're used to these days.

Legend of Zelda 2: Link's Awakening. Played it a month or two ago and finally was able to beat it. That final level pisses me off each and every time, though.

I don't know if this counts but last week I finally beat the original Super Mario on Nintendo without dying once.

Earthbound. For some reason, I never thought to use the Prayer function in the final boss fight until a year or so after I stopped trying.

The red wizard/demon thing in the final castle is harder than shadow Link. Hint: when you get to shadow Link, walk to one side of the screen, duck down and keep stabbing. He'll walk right into it over and over until you win. Best. Movie. Ever.

Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, you mean? Link's Awakening was the Game Boy game that was released after A Link To The Past. Oh yeah, that's right. But yes, I mean the NES game, the sequel to the original. Tough as nails at the end. When I beat it, I celebrated like I just won the Super Bowl. Hint: when you get to shadow Link, walk to one side of the screen, duck down and keep stabbing. He'll walk right into it over and over until you win. That's exactly what I did. I kinda figured it out by accident and realized that he couldn't touch me when I did that. What a breeze that part was. But the dungeon itself was extremely confusing.

The original Legend of Zelda I finally played all the way through a couple of years back. Good times.

flipside- ever have a game ruined by seeing the end of it
for me the game Resident Evil 2- I went to work - game back home as the final movie and credits were playing(my roommate played the whole game during my shift)- I lost all interest in the game and traded it in the next day

I could never beat Punch Out as a kid. A few years ago I sat down and started playing it again. Now I can crush any opponent, including Tyson.

earthbound. i used a walkthrough for a couple things (where to get the pencil eraser, and a couple other things), but the rest i beat on my own. Legend of Zelda 2: Link's Awakening. Played it a month or two ago and finally was able to beat it. That final level pisses me off each and every time, though. The red wizard/demon thing in the final castle is harder than shadow Link. Hint: when you get to shadow Link, walk to one side of the screen, duck down and keep stabbing. He'll walk right into it over and over until you win. the Bird enemy before shadow link isn't that tough. just make sure you have enough MP to cast shield, jump, and thunder, and you can beat him easily. just be careful about the fireballs. Speaking of Zelda II, i can beat this game without much hassle now (i sometimes forget where the last 2 heart pieces are at times, but i hknow where everything else is, and can beat the game within 2 or 3 plays of it)

Three Games I had played non-stop and then stopped 3/4 into the game for some unknown reason. They are:
GTA: San Andreas Kingdom Hearts Final Fantasy X
I hope to beat them someday.

Parasite Eve 2. I bought it in 2003 or so, and only sat down and really played it last year. Same with Final Fantasy IX and Wild Arms 2.
