Face Front True Believers, The one and only Stan ' The Man' Lee, ol' Smilin' Stan himself, Brodie Bruce's " name amongst names", he who co-created Spider-man, The Hulk, Iron Man, The X-men, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, The Mighty Thor,Daredevil etc etc etc turns 85 years old today. While it's become fashionable to downplay Lee's writing contributions to titles in recent years ( as if that makes up for the raw deal Kirby and Ditko sometimes go) to play up the artistic contributions to characters ( and I won't deny that King Jack didn't get the credit he deserved for decades), the fact remains that Stan Lee deserves huge amounts of credit for getting people into Marvel and comics as a whole almost by selling himself as much as he was selling the company-- his way of ingratiating himself to the reader by things like Bullpen Bulletins, giving the comics credits so you knew who wrote and drew them, and acting as if creators and fans were part of a fun lil club the rest of the world knew nothing about all did their job to make ya feel like Stan was a crazy uncle or some such instead of an editor. In fact I'd say Lee as head cheerleader, carnival barker and party host was as important to Marvel's success as his writing skill. Granted he couldn't have been as successful without Jack, Steve, Buscema and the rest, but neither would Marvel or comics have been the same if there wasn't a Stan Lee. And at eighty five years old ' The Man' is still going strong. Nuff said. So happy birthday to one of my heroes, good ol Stan Lee Excelsior!

Happy birthday Mr. Lee, and thanks for the hours of entertainment you gave me as a child. (OK, OK, as an "adult," too.)

Anyway, Stan Lee was really essential for Marvel's rise to cockblock the DC monopoly of the field.

He does look great for 85. Sort of like how Dick Van Dyke hasn't aged in almost 20 years.

Stan Lee rocks. Happy Birthday to the Man! Agreed fully. I think I became a Stan Lee fan back in the day when he was doing voiceover work as a narrator for some of the Marvel cartoon series. That and the bullpen that I'd read in some of the titles as well. There were many a cartoon that started out with the words, "This is Stan Lee ..." And I enjoy his cameo work, and have sat through some 'dismal' movies to see his cameos (like the old man in Daredevil, the security guard with Lou Ferigno in The Hulk, the old man watering his lawn in X3, the wedding guest turned away in FF2), not to say that everything he made an appearance in was dismal. I also enjoyed the speaking part he had in Spiderman 3, and the friend of mine who went with me couldn't understand why I marked out like a little kid. Probably because she wasn't a comic fan ...

Sweet! Yay for Stan Lee!
He didn't create me, but he did create Spider-Man, whose costume my creators blatantly stole ideas from!
