...how did some of you get to this point? I mean ideally we should all be like that. Not crapty about it, but feel free and confident enough to actually enjoy life on your own terms. There are no rules of course, just wondering your experiences. Or are you not there yet? When you get a little wiser, and maybe a little older, you will come to understand that the only thing you can control is yourself, and the way you view the world. You can't get into someone else's head and change their mind. Therefore, because you can't change the way someone else thinks, the only thing you can do is change the way you react to how they think. Cruel words and unkind gestures only hurt if you let them. This man is correct. I only truely care what a small handful thinks of me. Everyone else I don't care one way or the other.

If I didn't care about what people thought of me, I wouldn't have any clients. So I'm probably a bad person in the eyes of many people here. Well I don't care about what you think

The only reason I still have to care about what other people think if because everyone continually makes threats toward me that they're not afraid to follow through on which would pretty much totally f*** my life up and I don't have any alternate methods to get around it....

"People who say they don't care what people think are usually desperate to have people think they don't care what people think. " -- George Carlin LOL, that's an excellent quote. It is from my experience that many times the people who say they do not care what anyone else thinks of them are sometimes the biggest attention whores at the end of the day. They of course crave the attention of -- you guessed it -- other people. I do care what others think of me since I don't like to have enemies, but I always realize that there are some people who just aren't gonna like me. For example I have a very distinct sense of humor that kind of helps make me who I am. I've met some people that think i am funny, and other that simply do not find me funny at all. I realize that not everyone is going to like me, and I am OK with that because I don't like everyone that I have met either. The key is to not lose sleep over trying to change yourself to be everything to everyone. If I didn't care about what people thought of me, I wouldn't have any clients. That's a great point too.... some people who are in sales or another line of work that involves winning and keeping clients had better care what people think of them to a degree. Otherwise they're gonna need another line of work!

i just really drink my way out of all my troubles You sound like my kind of people. And as Madison has said, there are a select few people whose opinions of me matter. But, at the risk of sounding like the unwed 16-year-old crack-addicted mother trying to find her babydaddy on The Maury Povich Show, "Y'all don't know me!" If I've never met a person, I don't necessarily go out of my way to be a douchebag, but if I happen to come across as such because of outside circumstances, then so be it. I'm not going to kiss anyone's ass, especially a stranger. When I'm at work, it's a different story since I have to deal with customers, my boss, and his boss. But if I'm out at the bar or something, and there's some dude sitting across from me giving me the evil eye, I either ignore him or give it right back. Does he think I'm an asshole? Maybe, but unless he's actually kicking my ass at that very second, I don't really care. My true, close friends know who they are; they are the ones whose opinions matter to me. Nobody else's.

It's not that they don't care, it's that negative attention is just as good as positive attention to the vast majority of them. They think they don't care, just as long as they get a response.

If I find out that someone's pretty much a prick, I don't care about their opinion of me. But generally, I find that the biggest pricks of all are on the internet. I gradually learned to not care what a bunch of people I'll never meet think about me or what I do or what I like by being here.
And when I dance, I dance like no-one is watching... which I've been complimented on many times.

Again, as I said earlier in this thread, I think some people are confusing two related but separate things. Not caring, or not paying attention to how others think is not the same thing as doing things, be it to get attention, something illegal, or any other action. Yes, attention whores usually don't care what others think, that's true, or at least they think they do. But that's not something that goes for everyone who has that mindset.

i've changed. before i always tried to hang out with the cool people and get constantly dissed. Then during the summer i decided what kinda of life is this? ans hung out with people who like me. i havent looked back. Now if people dont like me instead of trying to get them to like me i dont care. I am past trying to change people's minds about me so in that way i dont care. I do care what my family/friends think. I am myself around them but i still care what they think.

I just reached that point eventually. As you grow and mature, you become your own person. You decide what trends to follow, what trends not to. Some people never get over this self-consciousness, and I certainly still have elements of it, but I've never been more comfortable with who I am, and once you are too, you'll start to get over it as well.
