I'm trying to move into my own place by the summer, and have been doing alot of math. Like adding up my monthly expenses and my income and what not. So I have to pose a question for those who live on their own. So here's the math real quick. This is based on me working 45 hours a week, but overtime is time and a half for me and is available pretty much whenever I want it.
Total monthly income after taxes = $1740.00
So, expenses would be as followers (in US dollars):
Rent: $450 per month Gas/Eletric: $130 per month Phone: $57 per month Car Insurance: $55 per month Internet: $25 per month (depending on speed) Gas for car: $200 per month (about $50 per week) Food: $200 per month ($50 per week, maybe less)
Total expenses: $1117 per month
So that means that $1740 - $1117 = $623 dollars a month left over, after all bills, gasoline and food are paid for. That equates to roughly $155. 75 per week spending money for emergencies and household goods (toilet paper, shampoo etc). So in the experiences of you world traveled folks, does that sound like a reasonable projection for the future? Did I miss any bills (would be living in a one bedroom apartment where water/trash is included in rent. Rent is pretty cheap around these parts of Illinois). And some of those bills are on the high end, like our gas/electric now for two people in a 2 bedroom apartment is 130 a month, and if I'm in school, work, and just plain not home I could make it lower than that.
So again, does this sound reasonable? And do you guys think $155 dollars a week after expenses is enough to live on?
Thanks to anyone who replies to this. It's been a big headache for me lately.

My freind lives in a pretty decent apartment for like $470 a month I think, and he lives in St. Louis near a busy part of town. I live on the Illinois side of the Mississippi and it's much cheaper here.

How in the hell are you only paying $450 a month for rent? Are you renting out someone's basement closet?

How in the hell are you only paying $450 a month for rent? Are you renting out someone's basement closet? No. For a single guy around here, a small apartment is around that. The equation around here is nearly 450 to start, then add 200 more per extra room. And that's not even in the ghetto or anything.

Exactly. That's why roommates are great around here. You can get a sweet townhome for like 350 a month between two people. Vaulted ceilings, private laundry, pool, carpet, and sometimes free basic cable or wireless internet. Factor the other bills split between two people and 2 college aged guys or girls could live awesomely.

so you have $155 to spend on whatever you want every week? I think so, if I did my math right. Figure I put $55 a week in the bank for school expenses, that's a savings of $225 a month. Then take out another $15 for household things like deoderant, toothpaste etc. And I'm looking at $85 a week just for my own personal enjoyment. And I considered later on (in a year or so once I have amatuer and pro fights under my belt) teaching BJJ or something one on one out of my house for cheap, or tutoring basic Spanish or Writing for HS/Middle school and college freshman for extra cash. Seriously I spend all my time doing math and fine tuning all this crap. Does this sound reasonable?

I grew up in Illinois and rent was always pretty cheap. 350 for this place with everything included except gas/electric is perfect for us struggling college lovers.

Highfive for living in the Midwest! Here's another example: My freind's family owns a 3 bedroom home, with garage, a backyard the size of a small park, 2 bath, fully finished basement with a bar for $700 a month.

Going through your numbers, Mr. Carasio, and I see nothing wrong with the calculations. It's pretty much spot on.
So, $155 a week extra would translate into a fairly good living standard.

Thank you sir. That's encouraging. Another great thing about my job (there's not much good about it) is that if we work 7 days straight (56 hours in a week), 8 of it is time and a half pay (I make $10.45 an hour) and the last eight is double time and a half. So every so often working 7 days in a row can yield huge payouts.

I posted this on another forum, and I have a ton of guys telling me I would be in the poor house. It seems here that the consensus is that I would be relatively ok. But on the other forum, the level of intelligence is really low (sherdog.com, MMA website).
Man this is tough.

If you've counted $50 a week for FOOD and still have over $150 left over EACH WEEK...then hon, you'll do fine.
Except maybe you'll get fat.
I'm moving to Auburn Hills, Michigan, and will be paying a total of $450 / month, utilities, cable included, and don't make nearly as much as you do...and I'll do fine.
I hope :-\
