So I just saw Walk Hard this evening, and let me say it as plain and simple as it can be put: I LOVED THIS MOVIE. It's so much more than just a parody film. The fact that its being coupled in with Date Movie and Epic Movie really upsets me, because it's not just a movie that takes random and senseless pokes at popular culture (from 1996-2001, in the case of Date Movie).
The movie is downright hysterical. I'm thinking about seeing it again this weekend just to catch all the jokes that I missed the first time around. Its sad that the movie tanked at the box office, because this really could've been John C. Reilly's coming-out party as 1A in comedy (behind Will Ferrell).
I think the reason it bombed is because Reilly isn't famous enough to carry a movie on his own. But he made the movie. If Ferrell played the role of Dewey Cox, he would've overdone it and overacted the entire film, but at the same time it would've been a hit at the box office, because it had the Ferrell name attached to it. Don't get me wrong, it still would've been funny, but the humor would've been significantly less subtle.
And for those who are turned off by it because Judd Apatow's name is attached to it (and I was concerned about it going into the cinema), don't worry. This isn't another one of Apatow's sappy/mildly humorous "comedies with a deep message" like Knocked Up or Superbad. This thing is just right-in-your-face comedy, similar to Talladega Nights.
If you've got nothing to do on a Friday or Saturday night, I recommend you hit your local theater and give this movie a try. At worst, you'll get a few chuckles and lose $10+. At best, you'll love it like I did.
Anyone else see it and have an opinion?

Do you have to watch WALK THE LINE to get the jokes?

Do you have to watch WALK THE LINE to get the jokes? By the looks of the constant f***in' ads on TV there are no jokes to get.

Do you have to watch WALK THE LINE to get the jokes? It wouldn't hurt, but by no means do you need to see it to get the jokes. I've never seen Walk the Line, and I still found it hilarious. I'm sure it would've been much funnier if I'd seen it, but don't feel the need to run out to Blockbuster and rent it.

Comparing it to Talladega Nights is the best move, would have been better if the tv spots said that too.
I don't think you'd have to see Walk the Line before hand, if you've seen a trailer for it, you know the look and how lame that movie was, while Walk Hard is pure awesome.
This will be one of those that become HUGE once the dvd is released.

I too loved "Walk Hard." And I gotta say that when I was watching it I was actually saddened by the prospect that it had bombed, and we'll be robbed of a world where John C. Reilly headlines movies.
THIS is how parody movies should be done.
Btw, I totally don't get the Apatow backlash. The guy is freakin' comedic gold.

I was really going to avoid this movie due to me just believing it was another parody movie however I have yet to hear a bad thing about it from anybody who's seen and look forward to seeing it once I have the chance. I think most of the blame for it bombing should go to the way it was promoted in commercials.

Since I thought the above mentioned movie sucked hard, would I even find Walk Had funny?
I thought Nights looked good but when I sat down and watched it, I barely laughed.

At best, you'll love it like I did. Anyone else see it and have an opinion? I, too, enjoyed the movie, though I would hesitate to say I "loved" it. FYI, I have only seen parts of "Walk the Line", so there may have been some stuff that flew over my head. The movie did drag at certain points, but the back and forth drug jokes between a clueless John C. Reilly and Tim Meadows had me rolling, as did the Temptations joke towards the end (if you saw it, you likely know what I am referring to). To be honest, what impressed me the most was the music. I can't believe how GOOD those songs really are, and as far as I know, it's all original fare for the movie itself. I doubt Reilly actually sings them, but that "Beautiful Ride" song at the finale is really a VERY GOOD song! I would say the music, despite its parodic nature, is what surprised me the most.

^ Agreed. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but it was not as gut-bustingly funny as I thought it would be. I think the best part of the movie were the cameos, because there were so many good ones and ones that barely made sense that were still funny (watch out for Buddy Holly and The Beatles, those who haven't seen it).

Actually I think he does sing. I know they were doing "Dewey Cox: LIVE!" to coincide with the premiere in certain cities. Here's a video... www.break.com/walkhard/dewey-cox-live-in-nashville.html

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, I guess. I just find movies like Anchorman and Talladega Nights significantly funnier than movies like Knocked Up and Juno, because you don't have to put up with the movie having a "deeper meaning and message". Maybe its just me, but I'm a sucker for stupid humor. That being said, there's a difference between Walk Hard stupid humor and Date Movie stupid humor. I can't say it enough, if you're shying away from Walk Hard because of the recent nightmare of "parodies", have no fear. The two movies are worlds apart in the comedic stylings.

Dewey, you don't want none of this s***!
What is it?
It's *insert drug name*.
What does it do?
It *goes on to list the symptoms of said drug, all of which sound perfect to Dewey at the moment* So trust me, you don't want none of this!
Actually, I think I do!

I saw it a few nights ago, it was AWESOME. The soundtrack is a must buy as it is hilarious. VERY well done parody movie. I'm glad John C. Reilly finally got to be a front runner, because he's got the skills.
