The CD-i Games don't count...
Zelda is one of, if not the most prestigious game franchises out there. Invented by Shigeru Miyamoto Zelda is always pushing the boundaries of what it takes to be an action-adventure game. Whether it be adding saves, an explorable world, perfecting 3D, popularizing cell shaded graphics, or showing off Wii controls. All while retaining the same basic gameplay its fans know and love. Each game is like coming home, but all of us have our favorites.
What do you think is the greatest?

Link to the Past hands down. One of the best games ever made.

I made this poll a few months ago. I went with Link to the Past then, and I'll do it again.
Though I'll also add that Ocarina of Time is known as the greatest game of all time for a reason.

Is it really?(Not being an ass, I have just never heard or read that anywhere before). I thought that game sucked big time personally. I did enjoy the horse riding though.

It's been the Highest Reviewed Game over at Gamerankings.com for over a decade, only beaten for three days by Super Mario Galaxy. It regularly tops Best Game of All Time lists.

That is weird wild stuff. I did not know that. I am usually in the minority in the gaming world anyway. Bad Dudes for G.O.A.T. in my book. Cause it had bad dudes, and Karnov was in it.

It's a close one between Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, but I say Ocarina of Time. There was so much to do in that game outside of the main quest (Horse Riding, Poe Catching, Fishing, etc.). It was just an epic question all together and extremely enjoyable from start to finish. Technical masterpiece and just a fun game overall. My only gripe is the lack of dungeons when you're older Link (only 5, Link to the Past had 7)
But Link to the Past is no slouch. Best SNES game ever. Ocarina of Time is #1, Link to the Past is #1a. But that's just my opinion.

Something that has to be considered is just how much of a jump OoT was. Sure Nintendo had already done 3D, but for an action-adventure title like Zelda it was largely new. But they completely nailed it, now every action-adventure title in some way looks to OoT for guidance. Not to diminish LttP's accomplishments, it is 2D gaming perfected. But it took a lot more time and thought to make OoT.

But it took a lot more time and thought to make OoT. Agreed completely. Mario 64 was, up to that point, the pinnacle when it came to 3D gaming (if I remember correctly). Then Ocarina of Time comes along and outdoes it completely, with more detailed and larger environments. The score was epic, the dungeons were challenging. The water Temple is still, to me, the most difficult level/dungeon ever. It's like the developers got bored one day and said, "Ya know what? f*** this. Let's completely destroy the spirits of everyone who plays this game". And as much as I hated that level, I'm so glad they put it in there (if only for the satisfaction you get when you finally beat it). Link to the Past was great, but Ocarina of Time seemed to take everything LttP did right, improve upon it, and put it in a rich, detailed 3D world.

Actually, Grisham, BioShock ALSO beat OoT for top game, but it last longer than Mario did. It beat OoT for 5 days, then fell off the top 10 list, and recently showed back up on it.
As for my vote in the poll, I chose Link to the Past.
I'll say it before and I'll say it again, OoT is just Link to the Past in 3D.

Second of all, OoT IS LttP in 3D. Honestly, I don't think the team that developed OoT ever expected to outdo LttP. Why else make the game a prequel? I think they originally intended LttP to be the center of the Zelda canon, but when OoT got all the praise they started talking about that split timeline nonsense. And just to throw it out, wouldn't it be interesting if Koizumi and Aonuma switched places for a generation?

How Ocarina of Time isn't running away with this, let alone not winning, is beyond me...
Hell, A Link to the Past isn't even in the top 3 as far as I'm concerned.

And just to throw it out, wouldn't it be interesting if Koizumi and Aonuma switched places for a generation? Yes it would. But yeah...once OoT overshadowed LttP, Nintendo started going in the "this game takes 1,000 or 3,000 or 5,000 years after OoT!" nonsense with the timeline. I mean, that works with Windwaker because, well, it is set so far in the future from OoT that Link actually did become a legend himself. But come on....the time difference between TP and OoT? You go to the same places! At the very least make it be a reincarnation, instead of "a new youthful hero arises." If I remember correctly, didn't the time line of Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Link to the Past all flow from one to the other, and basically had the same Link? If so...with OoT and Majora's Mask being prequels to LttP, that means we have the same Link for 5 games, then we split off to the several millennium gaps. I think the only other Zelda games that have a chronological link(pun intended) are Windwaker and Phantom Hourglass, and that's because Nintendo flat out said that PH is the direct sequel to WW. But hey, atleast it is easier to place the Zelda timeline than the Mario timeline. The Metroid series is the easiest of the big 3 franchises to place in order, because...well everything released after Super Metroid is a prequel to Super Metroid. And then you have the prequels within the prequels, such as Metroid Prime Hunters being a prequel to one of the Metroid Prime games(I think Echoes).

I'm admin at a Zelda RPG so while I don't really care for the argument I have to follow it. LoZ and Zelda II come after LttP. The earliest game on the time line is either OoT or Minish Cap. Then there's a time split that occurs at the end of OoT and there's two storylines. It's all so complicated and honestly, I don't think there was ever intended to be a straight plotline. If there was it got screwed over once OoT hit big.

Maybe Nintendo intended it to be like in Windwaker with each game not connected to another game in the series featuring a new Link, a new legend. I don't really know, all I know is Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the first game after remembering exploring the woods and caves around his childhood home. How he ran into goblins, orc, faeries, octorocks, and a giant evil pig named Ganon, I don't know.
