I have a few friends who are and they say they love their partner more then life itself and lovey dovey stuff like that, but to me it just makes no sense. How can you fall in love with somebody who you have never so much as seen before? One of them lives here in kansas like myself, but the other lives in Australia. AUSTRALIA! How can you feel that much of an attraction towards somebody you have only talked to on the phone, IM'd, and comment chated on myspace? It cant be that they're just nerds who sit in their mom's basements all day, They are both social people. They get out and socialize with other human beings and im sure either one of them could get a girlfriend/boyfriend in their area if they wanted to. Why choose to be in a relationship with somebody that you can not hug, kiss, or express your love physically in any other way(get your mind out of the gutter, i know who reads this stuff)? The couple i am talking about has been together for 6 months plus. I just dont get it. Could somebody make sense out of this for me?
My theory on this is that its easier to open up to someone when you're not face-to-face with them and you're in your comfort zone. The flipside of this though is that you can idealize someone if you can't put them in a real frame of reference. Its a quasi-relationship, appealing in some ways but actually incomplete. Its hard to sustain something without any physicality I think.
I agree with this. It's much easier for some, harder for those that need a bit of physical interaction to find someone attractive.
With me, I've done the long distance stuff and for the most part, it's been good. Yeah, the distance sucks, but I've met everyone I've been romantic with in person as well. So it helps.
It's a really good confidence builder for those just breaking out into the dating scene for the reasons thedarkone already mentioned.
