BEFORE the movie started they showed a preview for one of those lousy dance movies. I said real loud "I wish the predator would kill them." A bunch of people laughed.
Its certainly not up there with Jerk Store but it made some people laugh.

I saw it a few days ago. I've not been on in a couple days though.
It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad. Merely average, and pretty graphic. Too much Alien and totally unlikeable characters. Only one truely surprising scene.

I saw it last night... I'm a really big fan of the Predator and Alien franchises... In my opinion, Predator was the better of the 2 movies; and Alien pretty much goes in order of release (Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection) in terms of quality (although the redone Alien 3 cut was much better than the theatrical version...shame that the directorial vision was butchered). As for the AVP movies... well, what can you say. AVP was a mish-mash of disappointing scenes coupled with some problematic issues for continuity.
Thus, I went into AVP:R with a rather fearful outlook... Yet I have to say that I really, really, REALLY enjoyed it. Are the characters well-fleshed out to the degree of Ripley, Parker, Hicks and co.? No. Could the movie be longer and use that length for better suspense? Of course. But the film succeeds in capturing, through homage (if you're optimistic) or blatant stealing (if you're pessimistic), a lot of what was enjoyable in the earlier films. One poster said that the sounds of the National Guard/Aliens fight was highly reminiscent of the Marine/Aliens fight heard over the radio... and it was, and I loved it... the eerie shrieks of the Aliens, the rapid gunfire... Predator-wise, there are some excellent 'roaring' shots outlining the hunter on the background of exploding buildings, great stuff...
As for the humans in the story, there are of course varying levels of depth/character development - some of it very simplistic or dualistic in nature (i.e. by-the-book Sheriff vs. grey-area ex-convict) - but there is enough that it makes you wonder just who will make it out alive...
There are some questions that arise from the movie to perplex 'hardcore' fans - i.e. surrounding the gestation of the alien and the necessity of facehuggers; the honour code of the predator, etc - but in general there is nothing as horrifyingly disruptive as AVP.
I'll put it this way... I felt dirty and ashamed when I bought AVP in the discount DVD bin. But I will happily buy AVP:R when it is released on DVD. As a fan of both franchises, I took the film for what it was - entertainment in a familiar and disquieting universe - and had a great time in the theatre.
True, in space, no one can hear you scream... but in a dark movie theatre, everyone could hear me applaud.
