It's well known that Brian Pillman was scheduled to be in the Uncensored 1996 Doomsday Cage "match". Pillman showed up on the March 18th Nitro to apparently confirm his spot in the cage but that wasn't the case. He was scheduled to be in this bout but is said to have scheduled a throat op near the time to avoid being in the Doomsday suckfest. Hogan had seen how hot Pillman's character was getting and wanted him in but Pillman didn't want to be in the match and the throat op was his chance to back out. WCW's storyline reason for this was that he wouldn't work on the same team as Kevin Sullivan.
We all know how much the Doomsday match sucked, but could Pillman have made it watchable?

For the record, the kayfabe reason is probably the closest thing to a real explanation as to why Pillman wasn't in the match. From what I'm led to understand, Pillman and Sullivan were not friends at all.

No they were not and thats probably a very big reason as to why Pillman didn't want in also.

Who all were in the cage against Hogan and Savage? I remember the Dungeon of Doom, Luger, Zeus(or "Ze Gangsta"), and the "Ultimate Solution". Am I forgetting someone? And didn't Brother Bruti show up to help Hogan? That match was a total clusterwax.

I don't think anybody showed up to help Hogan. And other than the Dungeon of Doom members there was Flair and Double A.

Pillman was in no way laying down for Hoagn at that time, so that is the biggest reason. He was protecting his own career. |

All of the others in that ring were such superstars of the industry that Flair had to be brought in so that someone could be pinned by Hogan! And yes, even with two actors and a bunch of perenial mid-carders in the ring, it was Flair who did the job. |

Pillman was light years above everyone in his character. He's one of the best promo guys/characters ever...but I am a huge Pillman mark (I must have worn out that dvd by now) so ya know...I am biased. BTW, anyone who has not seen his match w/Johnny B Badd from Fall Brawl 95 should check it out, great great match and Pillman basically turns heel during the course of it

Man, some of the incidents you all are recalling are reingniting my hatred for Hogan. I loved WCW as a kid. I merely liked the WWF. When Hogan came to WCW in 1994, I was older but not yet a smark. However, I was wise enough to see that Hogans arrival could be trouble. I was hoping that WCW was going to have pride in their histrory. Sure, they weren't going to give Hogan a boatload of money to be a jobber, however, letting him own everyone would make the company look second rate compared to the WWF right? I said that if they let Hogan beat Flair clean, they just said "The WWF was always better than us". Well not only did Hogan win the first match clean, but he won a retirement match clean. He won that ridiculous doomsday match clean, after weeks of making all four horseman beg on their knees in a corner. As a wrestling fan, I love Ric Flair. However, sometimes he could get me so aggravated. Stand up for yourself Ric. Stand up for Arn and Pillman. As much as it hurts, stand up for Mongo. An ex football player with the world champ Chicago Bears should not be begging Hogan for mercy when his 3 partners in crime are next to him. The only time Ric Flair said no his whole career was when they wanted to put a toga on him, call him Sparticus, and have him drop the belt to Rick Steiner in 30 seconds. He did walk out when WCW gave Bret Hart 3 million dollars a year while Flair made less than 1 million. I am sure Flair remembered that he was the one that dropped the WWF belt to Hart, setting him on the path to greatness that would eventually lead Bret Hart to a salary three times that of Flair. The only problem was that Bret didn't build WCW,. Flair built WCW. So, they show their gratitude by giving an outsider who was a marginal draw at best as champ a contract worth way more than Flairs.
P.S. I voted no, WCW would have jobbed Pillman out. It would have been great if Pillman would have started shooting in a match with Hogan. However, it probably would have hurt his career. The stuff he pulled with the contract might have been amusing to other promoters. However, when you mislead the promoters into thinking you will do the job in a main event caliber match, other promoters will take notice.
