Imagine if the Rock was released for whatever reason at the peak of his heel status back when he was fueding with Mankind. Do you think he would be accepted? I don't think it would be that strange at that stage in his career. Just a thought that came to me this morning.

The Rock would be the greatest heel in ECW history, even better than Cactus Jack in terms of "what the hell is the Rock doing here? The Rock is too damn good to be in this rathole federation performing in front of all these sweaty, disgusting, candy-ass virgins."

They would have literally had no need for Mike Awesome if they'd had The Rock.

I don't think so. The Rock was never a very impressive wrestler, and his style was anything but 'extreme,' and wouldn't have fit in at ECW.
But could you imagine The Rock with New Jack and Mustafa in Tha Gangstas? The Rock & New Jack are some of wrestling best promo men - imagine them teaming up!

Heyman was good at utilizing every body and an ECW spin on The Rock would have been very interestin.

The Rock is ECW, Heyman could make it work. because Heyman is better at using the postives about a guy to cover up the bad. The Rock being as good as he is on the mic. It could work. I mean they had worst talents there like 911.

Rock in ECW in 1999-2000 would be slightly less hostile than Cena in ECW in 2006. Both fall into the category of "super-pushed outsider with (real or perceived) workrate issues." The difference would be that Rock eventually would find a way to win them over.

As a heel yes. I think the fans would have hated his guts.

I think the perfect time would be if the WWF released The Rock right after WrestleMania XV (after fulfilling his obligations and dropping the title to Stone Cold on his way out) then suddenly he appeared to feud with Taz. (Remember that was when Taz was calling out the WWF and WCW champions including The Rock in his promos regularly)
.......I still wish the WWF/E would have booked Taz(z) properly as the unstoppable human suplex machine he was back then. I'M PISSED NOW!

Rock wouldn't have worked without The Rock name. I don't think he owned it until Scorpion King came out.

Wow Paule was stupid with that move. Doesn't he know nothing could have come of it? It's like VKM or something.

I don't see why not, Sid managed it, so did Scott Hall, but those two were only short time type deals, if we're going for bizarro world logic and The Rock decided to stay there full time, then eyea i could see it going down well.
Have him come in in coprporate Rock mode, completely running down the company and bragging about the money he has, like Lawler but times by 1000, and completely get him over as the cocky uber heel people would pay to see get his ass kicked every week, but keep the pay off waiting until he has to face someone like Taz.
Of course none of this matters now unless someone has a flux capacitor.

It's like VKM or something. It wasn't really a major part of the show taking up whole quaters of shows like VKM or anything, just Taz occasionally saying something along the lines of "AHHM TERRRZZZ THE TUFFEST LEGIT WORLD CHAMPION IN THA WORLD, IM CALLIN EVERY OTHER ONE OF YOU OUT, BEAT ME IF YOU CAN, SURVIIIIIIIIIVE IF I LET YOU" etc. to just try and get him over even more as some ultimate fighting lunatic machine.

It's like VKM or something. Well, although not specifically for that, that was the year when PWI finally recognized the ECW title as a World Championship. I can't help but think that having what seemed like the most unstoppable badass in wrestling as the champ didn't hurt matters much. Damn it, I wish the Dudleys and Taz hadn't jumped ship to the WWF in 1999........... (although the Dudleys leaving set up Raven's return absolutely PERFECTLY)

I thought The Dudleys act had gotten old by the time they went to the WWF, low point of it all was Guilty As Charged 99 when they spoke about absoloutely nothing at all for twenty minutes, then went on to have the worst match of the night.
They didn't get interesting (to me) again til they started powerboming people through tables and changed their ring gear, and generally sped the pace up and started kicking ass again.
